Fps Drop. Performance loss. Major stutters. Need help please
Need help please ! Have a brand new custom high end PC. 4.8 ghz i7 4790k MSI military grade motherboard Gtx970 3Gb have 8Gb 2000mhz memory 1 tb HD mechanical for C drive. Have 500 go HD for Storage and Fsx is installed on my 1Tb SSD Samsung . The guy who built it followed Nick's bible way to setup PC for fsx. All my AI aircraft are installed on Storage drive. I have fsx frames set to Unlimited, have no external frame limiter, in my fsx cfg have Highmemfix, affinitymadk14, bufferpools=use pools 0, texture bandwidth mult=40, have TERRAIN MAX AUTOGEN BUILDINGS=800, TERRAIN MAX AUTOGEN TREES=1000, LOD Radius =4.5, TextureMaxLoad=4096, upperframeratelimit=30, scenery complexity set to Dense, autogen density set to sparse, water effects set to 2.x , I have Rex4 texture direct , rex essentials plus for my weather Engine updated, ORBX ftx global with updates , pmdg md11 747 737ngx, coolsky super80 pro & level d 767. My graphics card are updated and everything else. I'm using nvidia inspector and have it set to 8sx+4x with 2x grid supersampling. Fsx is set to antroscopic and antialiasing turned off. Vsync is set to Force on and in my nvidia control panel global vsync set to adaptive. I have all major AI airline aircraft with plans and am using FAIB and AIA native models , the only ones that aren't native are my AIG 757's and few other planes. I bought ultimate traffic 2 just so that I could use the native Fruit stand airbuses cuz I heard they are native thru that AI package BUT I DONT USE ULTIMATTE TRAFFIC...all my traffic is compiled from aiflightplanner. My PROBLEM is with all that and trying different things . I get a major stutter when in VC on approach to major airports and when I'm at the holdin lime of runway entrance when I line up on runway the view stutters like crazy . For example when I'm at KLAS and line up for Rwy25r when in vc view I'm looking at Vegas strip and it stutters crazy. Even on approach to LAX. What's the problem ? Is it ORBX, too much traffic? Fsx Trees? Orbx lights? Non native models? I even lowered ground traffic boats and ferries and airport traffic to 5%. Please need help since I have a expensive system

Guy who built it...

That is your problem. When you need something done and done right do it YOURSELF or it will never get done correctly. Nicks method is time consuming and unless that GUY wants to waist HIS time on a software profram pushing 9+ years old I'll bet he had you on the hook.

you're using affinity mask = 14 on an i7?

He shouldn't be using the 'Affinity mask' at all. It's been debunked.

A TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT setting of 40 is extremely low by today's standards. The lower the setting, the more FSX will stutter. Default FSX:SE comes with a setting of 160.

I recall Phil Taylor from MS saying it can be set as high as 400 and as low as 10. The lower ths setting, the more FSX will stutter.

Based on a guide found on NickN's site, these settings may be of use to your system:

MAX_TEXTURE_LOAD=2805
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=273
TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=1024
UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=30

The guide: http://www.simforums.com/forums/fsx-tweaks-demystified_topic37948.html

I don't personally use the autogen slider settings you have. I just set mine to sparse and it doesn't stutter.

Yep. One of the recent patches of FSX:SE will auto-calculate the correct AM setting based on your system.

That's an interesting development. I'm not up to speed with the recent patches actually. I think we can all agree though that NickN's Bible is a little dated if not applicable to FSX:SE.

He updated it not long ago. The affinity mask within the FSX community as a whole is generally NOT recommended.

The following is the correct link for Nicks guide:

Sorry, I meant to say a guide on the site, SimForums.com (where Nick's guide is also found). Not necessarily written by him.

There are a number of things that stand out as issues. First, using Nick's guide. You should't need any of that stuff for FSX Steam, Dovetail has made a lot of fixes on their own and you don't know how his "fixes" will interact. So I would start off by re-installing FSX. Second, you should be capping your frames, allowing unlimited frame rate is just asking for trouble. Cap the frames to whatever your monitor refresh rate is. Third, you need to verify system stability. 4.8 Ghz is pretty damn high and I'm skeptical your system is stable.

You say, you use texture bandwidth mult=40 ?.... why? FSX steam is using texture bandwidth mult=160 by default !!... (me, personaly use 2600)

also try to add the following:
STALE_BUFFER_THRESHOLD=1024
SHADER_CACHE_VERSION=2 <-- add this 2 lines under [GRAPHICS]

and this: TextureMaxLoad=60 <-- add this one under [Display]

I also use this:
[BufferPools]
UsePools=1
PoolSize=87000000
RejectThreshold= 524288 <-- this is a standalone tweak.

and don't be afraid about buildings ship trafic and trees, you have a powerful machine there !!
Set your frames to 40 or 45, it should be good though.

... Hey i almost forgot ....
Please do a defragment in your hard drive, where you have FSX steam installed. Trust me it will help .... A LOT !!!

OP said FSX is instsalled on an SSD, defragmentation is not something you should do with an SSD.

Hi everyone,
I totally forgot I had discussed this on the steam forum back in July. Had a newborn so been busy. I been updating my fsx and my pc with updates last few days. im ready to take back to the skies. I have been tweaking a little here and there. I appreciate everyones comments that were posted in the last 7 months. I am going to gradually tweak slowly based on the info you guys provided above. 1 huge note is that I originally posted on here because I cant get any feedback anywhere else.....but, my FSX is boxed version not steam. so hopefully the tweaks above will work. send me feedback if anything has changed or anyone else have a piece of input. Im goin to try with mitsoswu tweaks first since it was the most recent . thank you all and hope to hear from you guys soon. I wish AIG 757 and the Fruit Stand AI would all be Native to fsx. im using the ultimate traffic Fruit stand AI that's native (ie A330-200 ge, A330-300 ge, some 777), but all the Fruit Stand are not native.

Congratulations on the new baby! Also..Lock your frames at 30FPS and Use Nvidia inspector 1/2 refresh for Vsync. (If your using a 60hz monitor.
