A HUGE improvement in FPS.......
To anyone that has followed my problems with very low framerates (4 fps) recently. I found some improvement when I installed MSI Afterburner, which saw rates jump up from around 4 fps to around 18 - 20. Just now, I thought I would try something different. I right clicked on fsx.exe and opened the properties / compatibility tab. Just for the hell of it I ticked 'run as administrator' - even though I am the administrator and only user. Then I thought that, as a "what if" experiment, I would also tick 'compatibility mode for windows XP3 (service pack 3), and also 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings'.

Then I ran the exact same flight that I have been using for test purposes. And lo' and behold, the fps rates have jumped right up from around 20 to around the 50 mark !

I have absolutely no idea why such small seemingly insignificant changes should have such a big effect. Maybe might be worth someone else ticking those boxes just to see what happens?

Hi Glenn,

This somehow fixed "Mouse cursor on screen FPS problem" for me.. can anyone else confirm this as well? This may be a big thing..

Fantastic tip Glen. This also works for P3D. I've just tried it on both FSX SE and P3D and it made a big difference! Your hard work paid off in the end and by sharing it on this forum will benefit many others out there struggling to get decent frame rates. Thank you!

Are you guys running Win XP or just selected that to see what happens?
Rogue Jun 6, 2015 @ 11:33pm
Running Win7 here. Running it in compatibility mode makes sense since XP was the windows of choice back in 2006.

Perhaps it would be helpful if people above reported if they were runnin DX9 or DX10. I have no marked improvement using the tips above.

DX10
Win 8.1 64

I have the DX10 box ticked. Don't know why it works for some people & not others - I just know it was a big improvement for me - more than doubled fps. Maybe it has something to do with the type of aircraft? I do know that the improvement is not so great for me when using the PMDG MD-11 (as to be expected, but still about a 25% improvement) as opposed to, for instance, the default Cessna.

Or perhaps it only works when using the MSI Afterburner?? Just guessing here, but unlikely I would have thought.

I am not running MSI afterburner. But I am using DX10 and the DX10 Scenery fixer available at the following website. https://stevesfsxanalysis.wordpress.com/how-to-purchase/
Up until yesterday (before using Glen's tip) I have had poor frame rates (18-22 FPS) and juddery motion even though I have a Titan X installed (and a i7 5820K CPU). Afterwards, very smooth motion and 30-40 FPS (using a GA aircraft) at a resolution of 3440 x 1440 (ultra wide). Best FSX tweak I have applied in months! Glen's discovery needs to be made more visible before it gets lost in the forum...

While my frames have not been bad I and I do not run MSI afterburner I thought it Would give this a try anyways to see if any improvement for me. Have not notice anything yet but will need a few more flights to know for sure.

Using DX9 with no accelerator add-ons but do use Genesis and other scenery enhancements. Doubled my fps on a 5 year old gaming laptop.

I've just maxed out the settings and done a test flight in "major thunderstorm". 8FPS before and 60FPS after. You are a genius!!!!
