To avoid it you have to start adjusting your detail levels and/or the number of addons you have installed.
Where do I find the 4x option? Mine only shows Anisotropic, Trilinear, and Bilinear.

Out of Memory errors have NOTHING to do with the amount of RAM you have or another other specification of your PC.
OOM (Out of Memory) errors are to do with VAS (Virtual Addressing Space).
FSX is a 32bit application which means it is naturally limited to 4GB of VAS. If you exceed that 4GB limit, then you will get an OOM (Out of Memory).
For every addon or notch you put your detail sliders up, the more VAS you use. The only way to decrease your overall VAS usage is to reduce your detail sliders or to uninstall some addons.
