It appears the majority of people here don't understand that FSX is a 2006 game, it's pure 32bit. Has a 4GB memory cap, on both RAM and VRAM, doesn't support crossfire and is heavily reliant on pure CPU power.
FSX won't be enjoyable at under 10-15FPS. You're best cutting the sliders down so you can actually play the game.
You are correct, FSX is not designed for 64-bit PCs. No argument there. Hopefully the new Dovetail Flight Simulator will be designed for 64 bits and more RAM from the ground up. It is one of the reasons why I am not investing in add-ons right now. I don't want to buy something designed for 32-bit software only.
You can set up AF to 16x via control panel or nvidia inspector. nVidia Inspector offers one option, which is very relevant to me and it is Transparency antialiasing with Sparse Grid Supersampling which I really need set to 8x with 8xMSAA and 24xSuper Sample quality - eqvivalent of 32xAA in DX10. Not sure if transparency antialiasing is possible in DX9, but with DX10 all works fine. overclocked version of GTX970 with FullHD is strong enough for that.
For me SGSS is needed due to shimmering in addon aircraft VCs which is only one which can solve shimmering but with heavy clouds (enhanced by ASN and REX soft clouds) it is really performance heavy but result is perfect.
There is mostly nothing else what you can set better. You can find inspiration in DX10 How-To guide at: http://www.nzfsim.org/index.php?dsp=downloads&f_sort=fixer
I do not agree with you. There is no problem get 50-60FPS locked in rural areas even high settings and heavy on addons. Depends on you CPU. Current intel clocked about 4,5GHz and more is mostly fine. There is some problematic urban areas same as complex airports with complex aircrafts where FPS drops to 20s and maybe under 20.
I agree with VAS as it is problem. But... it should be reduced with properly setup. for example there is no reason to use REX4 with 4096 and 32bit textures, 512 and DTX5 are enough even 4k, same with maximum texture quality set to 1024. There is no visual difference.
You can deactivate scenery addons which are not used in current flight... and so on...
Your welcome, nice to read that you have good flying experience with my hint.
There is my FSX setup, but NI profile is not correct in video (AF filtering and Antialiasing settings to combined is not relevant), but rest - FSX, REX and DX10 fixer are.

video is from current rig - 970 upgraded to 980 and some decent OC applied
