How do I get FSX:SE and FSX disc installed in parallel
I have FSX:SE installed on my PC, having moved over from my old FSX Gold disc edition. The VA I am joining doesn't support FSX:SE on their servers, so I need to reinstall my FSX Gold. However, when I try to do so, I get the Repair or Remove options rather than Install, suggesting the installer thinks FSX is already installed. What can I do to get the installer to run and do a parallel install? It will be on a separate HDD to FSX:SE.

Before you get into this - one question - does your VA fly on an FSOpen or similar server (that requires you to be in Multiplayer mode and direct-connect using an IP address) or do they use a server that uses a connection client (like DafWings for a DafSim server, various servers that still use FSInn/FSCopilot or the VATSIM network that uses vPilot in addition to a couple of older connection clients)? If so, you can use FSX Steam Edition to connect once the appropriate client is installed.

So if your VA does not use a connection client -

As I understand it if you do not have FSX box version already installed then FSX Steam Edition with 'assume the identity' of FSX box version - basically putting everything that is FSX-SE into the file locations where FSX Box would normally reside.

This might help if you don't want to all the trouble of uninstalling FSX-SE:

Before doing the below - BACK UP EVERYTHING that you can think of. Then think again and go back and get EVERYTHING and keep it in a safe place. Then make a list of all your add-ons so you can re-install them. Trust me - you will not remember so make a list. (And, don't forget to save any aircraft.cfg files you tweaked for 'stock' aircraft - you will lose all changes on re-install) AND - don't forget to save a copy of your current FSX.cfg file and dll.xml files that reside in the User/[Name]/Appdata/Roaming/Microsoft/FSX (it will be named FSX, not FSX-SE) folder.

Personally, I would uninstall FSX-SE completely USING REVO UNINSTALLER - not just the built in Windows uninstall program which does not get rid of the Registry files (the things that will mess you up if not removed) - the free version will do nicely

Once uninstalled I would install FSX Box first, then re-install FSX Steam. Then, back to your list of add-ons and install them as needed.

Hi Dan, thanks for getting back to me. I've decided that's what I will do, i.e. uninstall FSX:SE, then reinstall both and set up. Gonna take a while, but I can't find any other way to do it. Fingers crossed.

Dan, do you recommend both games being installed in the same hard drive? I ask because the FAQs suggest separate hard drives.

I have no experience with anything other than installing them on the same drive. Have done this on two different machines (one Win7 the other Win8) with no problem.

Thanks. I recently purchased the boxed copy and want to eventually install both versions in parallel just for fun after having installed the Steam one first last year. The boxed game is crashed when I start up (after complaining about missing scenery) in the same HD or in a separate HD. I may try the full steam uninstall and reinstall with the boxed version down the road when I have more free time and a lot more patience. :-\

I have now got my boxed FSX loaded, and I'm just adding whatever bits and pieces I need. I had to remove the Steam version, so will reload that later. I do know that will work, as I've done it before.

Fingers still crossed!
