FSX Crashing on Startup / Splash Screen
Hi all,

I come bearing a very similar problem compared to the seemingly hundreds of other posts on this subforum. FSX just cannot start for me no matter what. Typically, I would've just kept researching more solutions. However, I continue to run on dry solutions, and can't seem to find a permanent fix at all.

Below is what I've attempted so far:
  • Delete the logbook.bin file. Doesn't work
  • Run FSX:SE in administrator mode. Doesn't work
  • Run FSX:SE in Compatability Mode. Doesn't work. So far, I've only tried Windows 7
  • Perform a clean install, deleting all source folders. Doesn't work
  • Restart computer to perform necessary Windows updates. Doesn't work

I'm willing to try any solution to get this sim back up and running. I still have a dying urge to do some routes on my PMDG 737, so any help is greatly appreciated!

Regards,
AJDerpatron

"FSX just cannot start for me".

Describe your symptom after attempting to start it. What does it do? Nothing? Displays the Splash Screen then nothing? Goes black after hitting Fly Now? What?

It displays the splash screen after starting it on steam. After a second or so, it disappears, and Steam gives me the option to start it again.

Hi there are you using a NVIDIA Graphics card by chance ? if so read on

Assuming you are on the latest NVIDIA Drivers 471.11

Not sure if this is a Windows Issue or NVIDIA Issue but i had same problem and checked the DMP file created by windows 10, The faulting module was NvCamera32.dll which is located in the Windows folder just search NvCamera32.dll and remove this file, you will find that removing if you are on nvidia brings back FSX i had this issue and it fixed for me NvCamera32.dll seems to be related to Nvidias Photo Capture.

Or roll back to the previous driver release before 471.11 which is 466.77

Try this hope it helps for anyone

Hiya. Tried doing a whole bunch of things, and I think the clean install may have worked, but I'm not sure. Tried starting it up today after restarting Windows, and I got it up.

Hello, my issue is the same as listed, but Steam does not give me the option to play again.
Instead, I have to "stop" running, then it allows me to play
Last thing done in FSX was "San Juan Island Run" Mission(It crashed while i was playing this missio, then the problem began)
Last add on downloaded before the crash was "Mission Editor" (Uninstalled shortly before the crash)

And as a tech noob, I don't know how to fuss with the Nvidia stuff. Can I be helped?

Sounds like all of you "may" have a corrupted fsx.cfg file. You don't say anything about making sure your fsx.cfg is not corrupted. Think corrupted fsx.cfg file. See my explanation of the issue and how to fix it here:

I have been having this issue a lot more lately with Windows 11 than I did with Windows 7 but it DID still happen on 7 too.

K, i'll try, but I've edited 1 entry of the FSX config, tested, went back to unedit it, then done some 4-5 flight before the crash began happening

For you guys.....

Discussion below contains my manual for successfully installing FSX on Win10 and 11, With additional notes on current issues. Some affected important popular add-ons, ASN and FSUIPC, how to install fix them, deprecated DX9, getting a clean uninstall etc.

I can fix fsx.cfg, have a good flight session. Go to Bed, Get Up, Start FSX and it will crash with the same problem. Know that it can get corrupted by 1 single session just after it was fixed, or not, it's random. It happens to me a lot with Windows 11 now. It may be that the OS moves on and leaves the FSX write file thread thinking it's finished but it's not and hidden CR/LF's, EOF's don't get written. Not sure but something is definitely corrupting it..and it still LOOKS fine when corrupted. I still have FSX on old slow response Sata Drives while my C drive is a fast NVME. Perhaps that is MY issue. Don't know but restoring my good fsx.cfg backup works... everytime! And if I don't have a backup, then I force FSX to rebuild it (force a new first time run by deleting fsx.cfg) and re-do all of the trusts and do my tweeks over again. Got tired of doing that, that's why I BACK IT UP!

Wow, thanks for letting me know so I know to ask the question first the next time.....

Your'e welcome and Thank you!
Happy Flying New Year 2023!
