A re-install doesn't replace existing configuration files, meaning if there is an issue in the configuration files a re-install typically will not resolve.
This thread has a number of troubleshooting tips/hints and the locations of the configuration folders/files that are created *after* FSX-SE has been installed.

Essentually renaming FSX-SE's configuration folders/files will allow FSX-SE to create new and fresh files and by renaming the originals you have a backup.
Also for scenery.cfg editing this link will provide a Java based scenery configuration editor that is super easy to use.

Just be sure to configure the preference paths properly !
One more thing is to make sure the FSX-SE main applciation folder contains a folder named "Addon Scenery" and that within that folder there are two additional folders named Scenery and Texture.
Cheers
lying the latest update from steam? maybe some one can post a list of them and where to get the senery?
Adding and removing additional scenery does change the numbering around and if there was additional scenery and the scenery was deleted without cleaning up the scenery.cfg then there will be old entries remaining.
For example if the FSX-SE main app folder was deleted so too would have any addtional scenery files leaving a scenery.cfg file that would now be out of sync.
Note a default scenery.cfg file without any addins/dlcs will have 120 entries and a clean default scnery.cfg file can be created at any time by renaming the original and starting FSX-SE.
Not quite sure by what you mean an update from Steam, FSX-SE itself hasn't been updated for years.
Were there scenery DLCs? or perhaps scenery installed outside of Steam ?
Open that folder and make two more folders named, Scenery and Textures.
Done.
Thanks for your replies. I have 120 areas (1 thru 120) in my Scenery.cfg folder. In my FSX scenery folder, I have 103 folders. In my FSX root folder I have an Addon Scenery folder containing the empty scenery and texture folders. I have no addon Scenery installed.
In Dec 17, I purchased a new PC which came with P3D4.1 and Windows 10. My old PC was sold. I became somewhat flustered with P3D while trying to add Radar Contact and some of my other favorites. I decided to install FSX SE to hold me over. Everything has gone very well with the Steam program. I got all my favorite programs installed and started installing aircraft. I installed my PMDG 747 and developed a problem with the views on my three monitors. After trying everything I could think of, I uninstalled SE and reinstalled it. That's when I discovered this error warning although my view problem was fixed.. I have never messed with the scenery files, and have read all you have to do is delete the scenery.cfg folder and a SE restart will generate the new scenery.cfg files. Since I have never had to do this in my 15 years of FSX, do you mean to just rename the current scenery.cfg file scenerybak.cfg for a back up and restart SE and it will generate a new scenery.cfg? I'd like to try this first. Take care, Mike N.
Spot on, rename the file and the next time FSX-SE is started it will generate a new clean file.
You might want to go to the next step and rename the folder that contains the scenery.cfg file, that way you'll not only get a new file, you'll also get a new folder of new files and the scenery indexes will also be rebuilt.
e.g.
Rename C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX to something like C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX_Orig
How are you finding P3D?
I have P3D version 3 specifically because I have a few x86 addins I really don't want to be without (A2A's accu-feel, and banking camera among others).
I also have FSW, Dovetail's FSX-SE up and coming replacement, it's 64 bit, has a 64 bit version of A2A's accu-feel and comes with Orbx Global as the default scenery. Already that's more than the default version of P3D.
It's not a FSX full replacement as yet, but it is fun to fly and has very high quailty default planes (GA only atm) built specially for FSW.
