I had the same issue before. It has to do with outdated onboard realtek drivers, despite you using an Nvidia card (I use GTX1070, but have onboard realtek which is disabled). Go to their website here[www.realtek.com.tw] and download and install the updated drivers.

How do I disable onboard realtek? I use speakers

I disabled mine in the device manager, but it may cause other issues depending on your hardware setup. The best course of action is to update the drivers by downloading the installer from that website and leave it enabled. I have different hardware setup than you, so I don't recommend you disable anything.

The funny thing is I updated the Realtek drivers through device manager but still got the error. Perhaps I needed to download both the 32bit and 64bit from the Realtek website? I ended up reinstalling windows and starting all over again so it's too late now. So if it happens again, you recommend downloading the drivers from the Realtek website? The error was driving me crazy!

Yes. I've had this error several times in the past. Once I updated the drivers, the error went away.

Thanks so much as I was puzzled. Hopefully, if I ever run into that problem, I'll know what to do.

It won't let me install the 32 bit drivers and only the 64 bit drivers

No worries. This means you're running the 64 bit version of windows. You won't need the 32 bit version.

I'm having the same error again even after updating the drivers from the update

Several workarounds you can try at this point. I only recommend you do the following if you feel comfortable messing with your system files.

1.) Try reinstalling the latest version of your GPU Drivers and DirectX. If you still get the crash, proceed to step 2.

2.) Disable your Realtek adapter. Go to your device or sound manager, locate any Realtek sound adapters, and disable them. If you still get a crash, go to step 3.

3.) Before proceeding, please locate and make a backup (copy and paste to a temp folder) the XAudio2_7.dll file in your drive/Windows/System32 folder.

Try the following methods after making the backup. If something goes wrong, you can copy and paste the backup to your Windows\System32 folder.

Copy the XAudio2_9.dll file, paste it to a temp folder, rename it to XAudio2_7.dll, and move it back to the Windows/System32 folder. Confirm the overwrite.

Run FSX again and see if you still get a crash or if there are issues with sound. If you encounter any issues, cut and paste your backup to your Windows/System32 folder. Confirm the overwrite.

Reply with your results.

One more thing...

Another solution is to run SERVICES, and stop the Touch screen typing program:
Press Win + R, type 'services.msc', press Enter
Find 'Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service', and double tap/click it
Click Stop
Select 'disabled' at 'Startup type'

This program has a 15 minute timer and it quits XAUDIO2_7.dll for some reason 15 minutes into a game, causing your game to crash. Unless you have a touch screen and use it for typing, you can permanently turn it off using the above steps.

BTW, if you enjoy light reading, this is XAudio2 explained at MSN[msdn.microsoft.com].

Is it the system 32 file for xaudio2_7.dll that causes the problem in FSX. This is maddening.

On top of it I'm right in the middle of hurricane Irma.
