Demo is finally out! :)

Thank you to everyone who helped us with the playtest!

This is a complete redesign of the first level based on your suggestions for improving the game!
This demo comes after two years of development. We’ve poured our hearts and souls into this game, and we hope you’ll love it. It’s not perfect, and it’s a small game compared to major titles, but we’re a tiny studio, and this is only our second game ever—so please be gentle!

In the meantime, we’re working tirelessly to polish the other six levels of OLAR. We’ll definitely release this year, but we don’t know the exact date yet. We’re taking our time to polish as much as possible to ensure the game launches in the best shape.

Over the past two years, we’ve worked incredibly hard with almost no funding. The only thing keeping us going has been the support of our amazing community on Steam, Discord, Reddit, and Twitter! We love you all. Your feedback and the dedication of our playtesters over the past months have made OLAR what it is today. Without you, we wound't have made it!

Here are some improvements we’ve implemented since the last playtest:
Level 01 redesign

- New visual effects for GPU and Gravity Grab
- New health tutorial
- Dataworld teleport tutorial
- Button crouching set as default
- Added trigger sensitivity calibration
- Added left-handed and switch movement options
- Added controller calibration settings
- Can now grab hand slider from different positions
- Added PS controller compatibility
- New train, now an actual locomotive
- Added shootable and breakable locks
- Fixed crawling head offset bug
-Added mantas at the level’s beginning
- Fixed widow disappearing on death
- Added memory menu to read previously collected memories
- Full Virtual Desktop Support

We believe you should try our game before spending your money, not buy a mystery box. One hour of gameplay should be enough to immerse you in the post-apocalyptic world we’ve built and help you decide if it’s worth your investment.

Demo feedback

I really like the new intro compared to the playtest version, the whole train climbing thing is pretty cool as a first impression. I also like how it doesn't tell you exactly what to do at all times and let's you figure out stuff. The boxes are too hard to break in my opinion, when I first saw one I thought it looked suspiciously like the ammo crates in half life alyx so I tried to throw it to the ground and it didn't break picked it up and tried again and it didn't break. Playtest Update

Hello everyone,

We’re hard at work on Of Lies and Rain and want to give a huge shoutout to our amazing Discord community for helping us polish the game and fix a lot of bugs. Your support means the world to us!

We added some great new enemies to the game.

Please welcome phtirus, a scorpion like creature, we should have just called it scorpion, don't even remember why it's called pthritus really, but we had this one in mind for a while now and so it basically looks like a scorpion but it's called pthirus instead. Apologies for the weird name!

We have also enlarged the Jelly enemy family, we now have MotherJelly and BabyJelly, the family is complete.
The little ones will hatch from eggs scattered across the ravaged world of Of Lies and Rain,
As for Mother Jelly, she brings the same slimy combat style as the regular Jellies, but with more health and bigger, deadlier projectiles to dodge.

Some other updates to the playtest include:

- dataworld have now dataworld looking hands
- you have now a way to read collected memories, just tap your watch.
- secondary hand now doesn;t automatically grab the weapon but you need to grab instead to hold it with 2 hands.
- no limit on machine gun fire in the dataworld
- Fixed a bug that made some levels look too bright
- added rain in the open levels
- Hits in the squid weak point now deal more damage and we changed its attack to make it more deadly.
- added memories in the last levels.
- many bug fixes

New Cover Image

Creating the cover for Of Lies and Rain was no easy task.

We wanted something that truly captured the essence of the game, its dystopian world, the looming AI threat, and the sheer struggle for survival under the mercury rain. Every single cover of a VR storydriven shooter has the character in the middle (even if you don't actually see him/her in the game because well it's VR).

So we started from there: Adam, our protagonist. A lone figure in a ruined world, standing against impossible odds and a ruined city. From there, we iterated—again and again. Adjusting the composition, refining the lighting and tweaking colors.

Everything you see in the cover image is actually stuff that you will find in game, we didn't want to make a cover that would maybe look cooler but woudn't really have anything to do with the game itself. We actually added the portal on the cover image later and we'll add that same portal in game as well in the next playtest updates.

The colors are also the main ones you'll find in the game, red for the bad guys (ADE minions, mercury crystals and such) and blue for our hero (guns, vfxs, freed dataworld cubes, etc.). The portal here should actually be red as Adam is going toward it to free it from ADE's control but for the image's sake it was better to have it in blue.

After countless revisions, this is it. This is the final (we hope cover image) for "Of Lies and Rain".

Can't progress past getting the gun.

Love the concept so far but i Cant get past getting the gun. I'm playing on PCVR an Oculus Rift. The game recognizes me using the trigger before hand but once I have the gun on my hand it doesn't see the trigger being used. So I can't use the gun or the jumping device on my left hand....

Demo feedback: Movement

I'm not sure if there are actually players who enjoy extremely restricted movement systems like in Half-Life: Alyx, but I hate it and wish it would be replaced with something better. Here's what specifically annoys me about scripted movement: 1) The player doesn't have a body at all — not physically, not visually. All movable objects just pass through you, even large ones. Unimmersive. 2) Player doesn't have legs, so they can't run. 3) Player doesn't have legs, so they can't jump. Minus movement freedom...

Potential but jittery

Hi. I've just played the demo for the first time and I've found the graphics to be decent in some places but lowish quality in others, but then I'm also finding it jitter a lot. I would say stutter but it doesn't quite seem to qualify for that :) It's not smooth. I'm using a Pimax Crystal Light, a 7800x3d, 4090 & 64GB DDR5. So it shouldn't be system limitations. I have turned down the settings to High from Epic, that's maybe made it a little better but it's just not smooth. Therefore it's making me feel a...
