How to enable controller support
EDIT:
SOLUTION TO GET CONTROLLER SUPPORT
IN MY CASE I HAD TO SWITCH from XInput (X) to DirectInput (D) while playing, flick the switch to D mode a screen will pop up saying controller disconected but just press enter on the keyboard and use the keyboard to go into control configuration. Once in control configuration select change device and tap a button on the controler and then the game should auto fill in the remaining buttions. finally click accept and you will be good to go.
The main problem with this is while playing the game does not use the Xbox controller button colors and button referances like it will say use button 4 or 3 and not Y or X with its associated color which will be a problem for my kid. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED AND WILL NOT CHANGE MY RATING UNTILL IT IS.

This game will not work with my Logitech f710!!!! It make no sense because it works with all of my other lego games so... there is some bug in this software!!!

This is a pain becuse all other games, INCLUDING PAST LEGO GAMES, use X input now have to switch between the modes to get other games to work!!! FIX THIS!!

how do i switch between those inputs

On my logitech f710 controler there is a switch between left and right triger so just make sure your switch is in the D position. If you do not have the same controler u might have the option in the software driver that controls your controler. So referance your manual to figure out how to switch between XInput (X) to DirectInput (D) modes

would there be a way to change what input the game takes instead?

Why deosn't the game just work as it should do with the defacto Steam controller, i.e. the 360 controller. Yes, this game needs a patch rather than users trying to solve shoddy QA.

The game won't recognize a DualShock 3 using Better DS3 and a DInput profile.

Edit: Correction: It did finally recognize the controller, but I had to map it from scratch; and when I did, it used Xbox 360 controller glyphs. :< So sad.

Edit 2: Correction again; nope; wrong again. Better DS3 didn't have a profile assigned to it, so it got picked up as a WIRELESS x360 controller of all things--but it actually worked. When it's hooked up using a DInput profile, the game won't touch it.

i had no problems with using my x360 controller as usual as soon as the game started - just like all the other lego games.

ninja edit - my controller is wired - i see some people have issues with wireless so perhaps thats the bug?

I don't think it is. Other's have tried the wired controller and run into the same problem. Very disapointed the game launched like this.

MY controler is wireless and the game auto maps the buttons to what you would expect them to be based on other lego game controler configs after making the change to direct D mode... Im sure if enough people give this a thumbs down on the steam store page then they will fix the problem to allow the controlers to work in X mode just like all the other lego games.

I had a problem with the wireless one and switched to a wired one without problems. I haven't tried Logitech F310 yet, I'm using Xbox wired controller at the moment.

You f310 like my f710 should work in D mode. Do you have the switch to select between the different modes

Xbox controllers have only one mode (X). There is no switch.

I ended up replacing a file in the game with a workaround for the old Lego game. Shame on TT for not even responding.

Hi. I am using an xbox 360 wireless controller, It has no switch that I can find, it has a button in front for linking to the computer receiver, thats it. I don't know what directinput and xinput are or how to change them. Very frustrating.

Mine is wired and I've had no luck in getting it to work. ITrying to map it myself hasn't worked either. Patch it or $$$ back.

Man, this bug is really weird, because this game is avaliable to Xbox 360 too.
