Where to spend studs? and where to start free play?

I've just finished level 4, and still don't know where my 'cantina' is, per say. Where do I go to spend studs and start free play? Is my home base supposed to be the bat cave, the space ship, or is that just another dungeon? Also, am I able to wonder around gotham or metropolis open world style?

Last lego game I played was Lego Star wars like 10 years ago so this is quite different.

You can buy any characters that you've found tokens for by bringing up the character sheet (by holding down U). scroll to any that are solid black, it will tell you who they are and the price, then press J to buy.
Red Brick Extras can be purchased in any Trophy room.
Vehicles can be bought on Oa once you have the planets available on the map.
Freeplay can be accessed on the map too.

I dont know either. I just completed level 5. But when I pause it it says return to Watchtower so I think its that.
