Can you play this game as one person?

All the Lego games are single player with a local co-op option. As a single player you change between characters with 'U' or, in freeplay, by alternatively bringing up the character chart and selecting from any available characters you have found and unlocked. If you activate co-op mode you get a splitscreen so both players can wander to different parts. It's easier with a controller so you're not having to share each side of the keyboard.

It does help. Thanks. But how to you get out of co-op mode? I only have one xbox controller and two switch betwen 2 characters I have to use the xbox controller for one and the keyboard controls for another. I know there is an easier solution than this. I can't figure out how to get the game in one person mode.

I haven't played this specific game, but in most lego games if you pause as either player in co-op, there should be an option labeled "drop out" which will put the game back in single player mode. Whichever controller you didn't use to drop out will be the one which you are now using to play.
