How to add a user made custom map
You can add a custom island/map manually to your world map.
  • Download a custom map
  • Extract file into folder: \..\Documents\Stranded Deep\Data\Editor\Maps
  • Place the custom island In the World Map, save changes and play.

SD Basics by Skarmo:
If you don't know how to find your Stranded Deep folder:
  • Right-click Stranded Deep in the Steam library
  • Choose "Properties"
  • Go to the "Local Files" tab
  • Click "Browse local files"
An explorer will open the \..\Steam\steamapps\common\Stranded Deep\ directory.
Click through the rest of the file path given above.

Details by lucyrocketdog:
Click on the link shown at the bottom of the map-makers posting. This should take you to a "download site" service where you will find the file for the island. You should not have to log in or anything, if they ask I say "no thanks, please continue".

Once you click on the download, you will get a compressed file. It will end in either .zip or .rar or possibly other things as well. So now you have to un-zip (un-compress) the file. This will take special software that is available for free.

Once you have the uncompressed file, just place it into the folder where the islands data is kept.

Some downloads links are 'masked'. Please remove the brackets [ ] (e.g.) before downloading. (TouriStarr)

Mac OS:
1. find game in location: /Users/"your username"/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Stranded Deep
2. show package content of "Stranded_Deep_x64"
3. extract custom island files into folder: /Contents/Data/Editor/Maps

Detailed instruction by jmhKY:
Another approach to adding a Custom Map to OS 10.11.6

Download a custom map (onto desktop—the folder inside the folder is the one you will later drag into the Stranded Deep Maps folder)
Right click Stranded Deep in the Steam Library
Choose “properties”
Go to the “local files” tab
Click “browse local files”
On a Mac a Stranded Deep folder will open—you will see the game icon in the SD folder
Select (don’t double-click) the Stranded Deep game icon
and on the toolbar (top of the SD folder) select the action tool (looks like a gear) to
access a pull down menu: select “show package contents”
Open the “Contents” folder
Open the “Data” folder
Open the “Editor” folder
You will now see the "Maps" folder
Drag the Custom Island folder (within the Custom Game folder on your desktop) into the Maps folder (you’ll see what is meant here)
Play!

Would be nice if this was updated! To add maps you don't go into your steam folder it is your documents! Take a look you will find it there. Hope this helps some.
So I'm very confused and frustrated. I've downloaded the map files to Stranded_Deep_Data/Data/Editor/Maps like all the other posts say to do. But whenever I boot up the game and go to the Cartographer, it says I have no maps in my local files. I've done everything I can think to do and nothing has worked. Someone please help!
I have a different question - how do you known which maps are for which build (experimental or stable) when the creator does not put it in the description?

I had maps destroy the world . When downloading maps I have to put them one by one in the cartographer and load the world to see if it works. Some maps make the game go crazy. Forts, palm trees, wrecks and other stuff trying to load in the middle of the starter island. Everything is okay until i get to the started island nad then the game lags like crazy, the frames drop below 10 and my GPU heats up like hell. I'm not sure why some maps fo this and some don't.
Well not a question, or a rant, but having just got the game a weeik oe so ago and had bsods due to files being locked from the Dev's Steam download in my doc's, so the game couldn't read or write new files was a bummer, I corrected all that. yep got to play for a few hours a couple a days ago. ( Took a hours of researching to find that problem ) Either some one was asleep at the wheel before the upload was done or it's a bug with steam's downloading system and the game.

And now seeing and reading these forums and all the problems is starting to make me wish i had not bought this game yet. And i play a lot of these types of early access games. Many of those are now full games. So not new to this genre of early access gaming and Testing. I like mods and modding games if the dev's allow it in their game.

Who ever is suppose to update this thread should have done so as to the new way to install the maps and or be able to add said folders if needed. This has done nothing but caused massive confusion for a lot of people. This is also something the Dev's need to stay on top of along with everything else.

For myself i did not have the editor folder or the maps folder and adding them in manually did not have the maps show up for me. I even made a custom map and saved it and it did not create any new folders or show up in any of the current folders for the game. I had already created a save game prior to doing so. What i did that did work was extract the map file to my default maps folder and it then showed up on my cartographer.
Ive set up a facebook page with instructions how to add islands.
There are maps and pics

move the folder not the individual files to Map folder
I uninstalled and reinstalled the game because some of my maps weren't working right and I was having some crashes. Now I don't have the folders to install custom maps. I tried to create my own folder in the documents folder but it keeps telling me that some of my files are missing in the extracted maps folders. I have checked them and all of the files are there but I must be missing something in the main Steam/Steamapps/common/stranded deep folder. Can anyone tell me if i need to add the maps there in a folder as well?
there is no maps folder.

must we create it?

i have only screenshots and world in this folder

It is now located at
%userprofile%\Documents\Stranded Deep
or
%userprofile%\OneDrive\Documents\Stranded Deep

If Maps folder is not inside Editor folder then make a new folder and name it Maps.
Copy paste MAP_random_numbers_and_letters folder inside Maps folder.

is that the right way, now?!
Thread is a bit outdated and replacement is available.
Unpinned and locked.

Thank you again, TouriStarr, for all the efforts you put into this forum.
I and many others hope to see you come back some day.
