Step 1 - Scale Image to 514x257 in your standard image editing program and save the file in PNG format.
Step 2 - Open Gimp.
Step 3 - Open the PNG file you've just created.
Step 4 - Click 'File' > 'Export as'.
Step 5 - Set Filename at the top: WhateverYouWantToCallIt.raw, make sure format is set to 'data,raw' at the bottom.
Step 6 - Set Export Path to 'Documents\Stranded Deep\Data\Experimental\Editor\Heightmaps'.
Step 7 - Click 'Export'.
Step 8 - Close Gimp, Open the Game and go to Cartographer
Step 9 - Edit or Create a New Island
Step 10 - click on the Gear icon near top right and select the heightmap you want to use (appears bottom right).
Step 11 - Click 'Generate'.
Step 12 - Use the sliders in 'Normalise Terrain' to adjust the height till you get it how you'd like it.
Step 13 - Use Blend to get rid of any 'spikiness', then manually edit the terrain to how you want it.

It'd be nice if the devs eventually made it so that a simple greyscale 512x512 can be imported as a heightmap, rather than all this faffing around with raw file formatting..
