What's the point of building a base?
It looks like the future updates plan for some new cool structures to be built, and even the current game seems to dedicate a lot of resources to building structures. But what's the point?

Wood is a limited resource, making fire also a limited resource. Fire is practically essential for survival, so it is basically essential to continue moving from island to island, and building a base serves no practical purpose. Sure, I can store equipment at base, but hey, if I have to paddle for a full day just to find an island that still has wood, none of that precious equipment at base makes lick of a difference for me.

Maybe if the islands were slightly bigger (kinda like in Castaway movie, that the game seems to reference a lot) - wood wouldn't be so scarce, so one island could be made into more or less permanent base, and player would travel to other islands to explore the wrecks...

Firstly, so all your base are belong to you. Secondly, hopefully they make weather more of a factor on you and items so that you'll need to keep them there. Eventually there may be creatures that would get at you while you sleep (or just eat your food).

Like the good Mr/Mrs/Ms/Master tiermann said, so you have chance to survive make your time. Bases will (hopefully) be more necessary in the future, that and a lot of people like the whole base building thing (lots of examples in the screenshots gallery ).

I’m enjoying more of a nomadic lifestyle right now, because of limited inventory space though you will always need somewhere to store essentials like medical supplies and tools, and will need the necessary shelter from storms etc. And rightly so imho or the challenge side will start to dilute until I’m not sure it will be a survival game at all anymore lol :KSmiley:

It’s treading that fine line of taking onboard peoples suggestions and ideas for the game, which is what early access is mainly about I think, and sticking to the concept of the original idea as closely as possible. Then there is the R/L vs Game arguments, where most of us like to cite R/L at the start of our paragraph but then throw in its only a game at the end to suit our needs/wants, I know I do too sometimes lol, it’s weird/hard being a human being some days :awkward:.

We have always said that Stranded Deep is a game first and foremost, not a simulator. Sometimes you have to bend the rules for the sake of functionality.

A forum search of ‘simulator’ was very enlightening and no less amusing, it is really very interesting how the word has been bandied around over the last few months, used as, or part of a derogatory statement most of the time.
I think that is probably a good indication though of how passionate people can be over the potential they see in this game based on what is clearly already there.

I think bottom line people have a great time just building a home.
In fact, many have even asked to be able to plant seeds.

The game has no objective other than survive right now.
When the goal of the game is revealed it will determine everything.

Would actually be awesome if instead of building a permanent home, we'd build a huge floating barge made of multiple wrecks and just travel the archipelago.

I have enjoyed building a homebase.

I build bases for fun. When the resources run too low, I move the operation 5 or 6 islands away and start over.
Check out my UFO. 23 stories up. heehee

you can build small sheds to store and organize your stuff.. kinda like lockers.

It just kinda feels like existing mechanics actively discourage base building.

Well it is supposed to be a survival game, one of the main features of which would be the struggle to find/build shelter... to survive :KSmiley:

I'm not sure how you would implement the ability to build your own personal fortress from the one first island, yet encompass the whole struggle to survive element I guess, it is only a game though I suppose though.

Edit:Have you thought about seeking out and commandeering a Sea-Fort?
am running into a simular issue.

While playing, i'm having a fun old time, even built a home for myself but then, after navigating to another island with the life raft and wanting an easier barge, i looked up if palm saplings grow into palm trees so i could farm enough wood to build a raft and explore, coming back to this island for nostalgia from time to time.

After discovering the limited palm tree resource, i stopped playing cause it wasn't fun anymore, especially since the aspects of the game such as building rafts and moving from island to island for more wood make it seem like you're supposed to be nomadic rather than stationary. So why allow us to build houses outside of creative mode or small shacks to shelter during the heat?

do trees not regrow in this game???

That would make the game very limiting.

It's like finding a clay tablet, learning hieroglyphics, reading it, then after a seconds thought molding some mud into a form and scrawling "me too" on it and then leaving it for some other poor bastard to come along and read the ancient thread.
