Stranded Deep
Compass, where Sun & Moon go up & down ?
Hello

Still playing my first game. Have built a big home on the starting island. Have "cleaned" 5 islands around so far. Have looted many wrecks inside this area. Found no compass at all.. :(

I would like to know if Sun & Moon always go up & down at the same position. I think so. But could someone confirm it?

And to the lucky guys who found a compass.. could you check & share the exact compass degrees where Sun & Moon going up & down?

Greetings

Yep, they always rise and set in the same direction. The sun rises in the Northeast and sets in the West. The moon goes from East to Southwest.

Thanks man, good to hear!

Do you have some numeric degrees maybe? Sun rise is 6 am, right?

Sunrise and sunset are at 6 am/pm respectively.

You can get the approximate degrees by yourself. A compass has 360 degs, so North would be at 0 degs, East at 90 degs, and so on. ;)

I have not found a compass so far. And of course I know that south is 180 and east is 90 degs.. ^^

But.. if you say "sun rises northeast" means exactly 45° and "sets in the west" means exactly 270°.. ?

If someone says "north" it usually means somewhere in north, not exactly 0°.

As long as I have no compass.. I have to ask that in detail. Sorry. And thanks again for your help!

Lol he said he can't find a compass which is the entire point of this topic to begin with.

And that's not how a compass works. It points the needle north, that's it. You would have to estimate any degree readings yourself in a fashion that is not very accurate. You can use a compass to very roughly know that you are generally heading in one of the four cardinal directions, but by itself that's pretty much all it's good for.

LoL. Okay. Great pictures!

I'm going to craft my own sun/moon clock and compass now with foundations, sticks, stones and shards on my main island.

then the day after you've done that you'll find a compass.. well that's how my luck seems to go.

Nah. Right after my last posting.. I found 3 compasses within 30 minutes. xD

But I still want build that sundial / "sun compass" thingy as an extension to my home base. I just have cleaned 2 more islands to get all the woods and stones to start this project. Still carrying all the stuff to my base.

While preparing this.. I figured out how to build a very nice and usefull grill station. And I found out that crabs are much better food as most guides told me. Can't await to get home to upgrade my base with all the new stuff & ideas. ^^

yep, that's how it goes :D
post a screeny of your sun/moon/compass thing when you're done, I'd like to see it.
Also don't creat a big stockpile of materials, spread it out a little bit & it should help reduce lag - small piles, not one big one.
Abstract-Player May 8, 2015 @ 4:53pm
Yeah. I have noticed those lags.

It' somehow helpfull to separate the materials and to make smaller piles which are not connected to others ( those colored crafting / mouseover markers ). And don't put your stuff to a location with crabs. They will push your stuff around which caused sometimes heavy lags ( happened right now to me ).

If I get the extension working, I will post a screenshot.. :)

Not really happy with it but it's a first try and I want learn the sun/moon positions and time of day to become independent from compass:

Double stick = North, left / right / bottom = West / East / South.

Sundial / Moondial is working too. Just look where the head of the support shadow hit a stone (currently around 1:30am)..

Upper stones = Moondial, left to right = 6pm, 9pm, 12 (double stone), 3am, 6am

Lower stones = Sundial, right to left = 6am, 9am, 12 (double stone), 3pm, 6pm

OT, but this is my Grill Station at a small supply island:

Place foundation first and camp fire second ( pit is possible too ). 12 crabs on top of the foundation became ready with a big BING. ^^

I hope they don't sort that out as a bug..

Good to hear your having fun!

My first sundial was much like yours then I discovered you can put a single support on top of another to make a 2 high pole! Rebuilt on a big beach, much easier to read. Less than an hour later, got a compass, followed by 3 more over the next 2 hours, typical :) I only smashed it down last week to make way for my bedroom and tools wing expansions.

I used that grille type too until I discovered fish. I collected several of each type and cooked half of them. With a save in the bank I ate each type and noted the health gain and side effects. Most make you vomit if eaten raw (like crabs and sea water do) and in those cases give no food. Bear in mind a lot of fish cannot be eaten even if cooked. The fish you can eat safely raw and how many food they give are pilchard 1, sardine 1, discus 1, frontosa 2, archer 2. Archers are the slowest, usually in packs of 2-4 and available in waters only slightly away from the island shallows so very easy to find. Fishing gets much quicker with flippers.

So I took the grille down, it did feel like a bug they'll fix eventually anyway. With just a spear and an emtpy inventory you can grab 28 archers in about 2-3 mins, that's 56 food bars! So now I leave a spear on every island I visit. Food problem solved and no fire needed.

Sidenote: just remembered I tried fish traps before spear fishing. Don't bother with them imo. You have to bait it to catch something. It only catches 1 random fish of that area, including inedible fish and lionfish which are impossible to remove from the trap without getting poisoned. The only take 5-10 secs to catch a fish but you obviously need to be at the trap to take it out. I tried for days to make them less of a chore but you need them out of the shallowest waters to catch anything but sardines and pilchard. Stick to the spear fishing :)

Usually I do same as you do in such games.. looking for the most efficient and simplest ways to survive and build/craft. But this cuts so many things out of the game.

I want something more.. at least at my main island.. because I bought the game just a few days before. Therefor, camp fire and cooking is welcome. ^^

I don't like using fish traps too.. so my fish trap is base decoration. Spear fishing sounds interesting but I need to learn about the look of poisonous fishes ( I already found some guides ) first. xD
