How do you know which island is yours?

Just curious to what ways people keep their particular island known to them when travelling to different islands, I like to put rocks or some form of item in the direction i want to travel back in.

Side note, What good are engine parts?

I have 2 methods to see home from far away (up to 2½ game hours of sailing away). One (first picture below) is I make a 2 story wood shed at the beginning of my dock and put a large awning (made of wood floors) on top to provide UV relief over my work area. This is a distinct structure that can be seen from far away (about 1 island) and also a very good way of holding all your sticks and protect you from the sun. Two, I wanted to see how high I could build knowing that their seemed to be a ceiling for the gyrocopter. The height seems unlimited, but I stopped trying at 50 stories. Around 25 stories, I noticed I could see it more than 1 island away. My measurement came out as 2½ game hours of sailing away. You see a second picture below of my first attempt at finding the max tower height.

yeah my case I have a pretty large cabin now is like 24 floor squares (6X4) and even though is only 1 story at the moment with the roof going up the roof is 3 levels on each side and then 4 across so it stands out pretty good. the moment going around collecting more wood and such to hopefully expand it even larger!

When this post was originally made there was no grid ....the world was infinite in every direction ...the further you sailed/swam the more and more islands came into existence.

This was a mod someone made that would map out your islands to a degree:

It did scroll off further north and south (top and bottom) although it was such a long time ago now I cannot remember by how much I just wanted to capture an image of the bulk amount of the islands as I could.
If I remember correctly the dark blue dots were Sharks Dolphins although the other colours I cannot remember now.

To help with navigation I did the following:

1. Go into Cartographer and take a screenshot
2. In a paint program invert the colours (so it's grey on white) and rotate so north points up
3. Print off the map so you can annotate with home island, shelter, resources etc. as you play

This relies on having a compass but saves having to leave sticks, build towers etc.
