Is there are way to empty your hands when your inventory is full?
Only ask because I think you swim slower when you have something in your hands.

Yes. Press Q to drop whatever it is you are currently holding. E to pick it back kup. Hold down your right mouse button to move something. And press Tab to open up your backpack and see your inventory.

try swimming with your lighter in the hands. It seems to have the same animation as regular swimming, different from having something in your hand.

Sorry, I shouldve been more clear: I dont want to drop anything because I need to take the stuff to my base island.
I already know clicking on an empty inventory space frees your hands - but when your inventory is full you cant, so I was wondering if there is a button to free your hands.

That's fine. I'm not sure if carrying something while swimming slows you down or not.. but have you tried holding down shift? It makes your swimming faster as well as running.

So seriously, The zero key doesn't free your hands? what about H for holster (maybe not the best for this game) Also why is R the flashlight/torch (in Australia we call it a Torch generally) but I keep hitting F for Flashlight lol.

Make '0' (ZERO) free your hands please, or in the 'Swag' menu (TAB) have a little icon for Nothing, like the NO symbol

Well R was originally for Resurect I think, but people kept pressing the darn thing so they changed it, the problem persists but isn't as prevalent now.

In game I don't know what the plans are for sure, but you can re-assign keys in the menu cant you ?
