My Plan for Rescue - Build a Lighthouse!

Now I have tower building power, I've constructed a 7 story lighthouse. Any passing ship will be bound to come check it out and give me a ride back to civilization! Plus, I can spend my time up there with binoculars and a flare gun!

Should build a campfire up there... I'm not sure if it's possible though?? D:

I thought about that, but I read in one of the threads about using a foundation as a cooking grill that there may be plans for making wood flammable outside campfires. I didn't want to lose all my hard work - also I had to clear cut four or five islands to get enough building materials to make this!

How many foundations did you use? 4x4? I tried building a lighthouse too, but I ended up having problems with the ladders..

Yes, 4x4. The ladders fit, I occasionally had to use the mouse wheel to position them. It's a tight squeeze to get onto the bottom of the ladders, but can be done with care. I used an alternating pattern:

F= foundation
L= open space with ladder

Floor 1
FF
FL

Floor 2
LF
FF

Floor 3
FF
FL

And so on.

And is it visible from each side of the island?

Yes, you can see it from all around, as far as the game lets you see buildings. Unfortunately as of today's game build that would only be a few hundred yards or meters. The picture I posted with the moon in it is about as far away as you can go and still see it.

Yeah that actually sucks a little. I always have to paddle very close towards an island and pray that it might be the correct one.. hope they'll fix this in the future, otherwise the benefit of such large buildings is quite limited

One thing I've noticed is that you can see the palm trees from farther away than you can see buildings and shipwrecks.

On my spawn island there's a larger part where I put my house and a smaller part where the lighthouse is, connected by a very narrow isthmus. There's a palm tree next to the lighthouse and I've learned to look for the main part of my island with the lone palm standing off to the side to identify home. I used only lumber from neighboring islands for construction, so I still have all the original palms here.

Also, at night you can see the light from your lanterns (if at ground level) farther away than you can see buildings.

Ahahah huray Again for MineCraft start thinking. Look its a straight tower, if you dident use mods then i salute that for collecting and building legit... but comon , Survivale games have been out for a long time now , and big cubes , or 17 story latters are not that impressiv.

yes i know people want to build really high then take the picture and then never play that one map again. but its much more impressiv if you build it in a play run. We Can all do better then big cubes/towers, put some thought into the designe of a building and its use within, like " bed room , living room , bathroom " try it like that and youll se eyour builds will be much better then MineCraft Styled towers and cubes.

not really taller than the sea forts. you can't see them unless fairly close so no rescue for you!

@ Red river: I'm hoping they will have an update where you can see things from farther away. My lighthouse isn't to much taller than the sea forts, but it is the tallest thing around for miles. It is a welcome sight to return to my island in the evening and see the lantern light at the top of that thing.

@ RawFeNriS: No mods. Built completely legit. It took many hours and I completely cleared some neighboring islands of palms. I've never played MineCraft, but I see your point. Lighthouses should be round, but I don't have the ability to make curved walls right now. I have a separate house on the island where I sleep, and keep my medical supllies, spare flares, etc. On the first floor of the light house I store my coconuts and shark steaks.

I thought about making the top floor extend out from the base, but that would require building up the entire tower then removing the lower six floors. That would take a lot of material gathering... hmm.... that gives me an idea: I do so much environmental damage that some environmentalist group rescues me just to get me outta there!

Now your thinking , but look at it before you do it, that interior building system makes better builds outside and in when you think of how a " real " building would be. Hide that stair case riser with a few difrent NSEW balconys at the base and maby widen the whole thing up the " shaft " so you can make a more " hut like " top to put in bunchis of lights.

MC made us build much bigger bcause its all squares right, so just think of every foundation as a one story box that may or not be used and then expand so you can create a circle.

That will help Making your plan and epic builds its what i use to create circles from grid pattern squared. from like 1 -50 radious.

Good points. Not sure if I have enough buildable space right here to do plan 7... may try that elsewhere if I get the motivation.

I also had an idea of having a staircase wind up the outside of the tower, but with my luck I would fall off and break something. I have to be careful on the top floor because there's no walls there.

Right now I'm focused on finding more lanterns. That is a rut that I seem to get stuck in. In the game Morrowind I ran around collecting every candle and torch I could get my hands on and decorating my house with them.
