As far as I know sharks do not respawn, if you killed the sharks around your Island you can go swimming.
I did, still with the same problem.
I leave my rafts at my island and go swim around with an axe to a nearby buoy, even great whites are hard for me to see there. I do see some marlins though.
Thing is... I want them to be aggressive XD
Thats exactly what I try to say to people that say that the aggressivness is too damn high.
I never got bitten so far.
When I go to the next Island I use the liferaft, set the course and never stop. No shark even touched my raft yet, no problems at all.
This is just my story, I don´t demand more aggressive sharks, I think they should behave as natural as possible.
Here you go. The action starts about 90 seconds into the video. Enjoy the unedited massacre! If you have small children, you should send them to a different room before viewing this video ;-P

This was recorded on a fresh install of Stranded Deep 0.02.H1 with no modifications of any of the game files. Attacks were unprovoked and as you can see the entire game was recorded from starting a fresh save file to the inevitable death by shark in less than 7 minutes! I am going to start a new type of Olympic Games and I will called it Death by Shark and the goal will be to die the fastest from unprovoked shark attacks ;-P
Yes, I made myself a target by not actively trying to avoid them, but I think this should provide proof enough of how annoying and deadly they are ;-)
Travelling to other islands is usually ok, as soon as i hear the music i just keep paddling hoping i can get away. The tigers can swim faster than u can paddle and the very few times i've glanced behind me the tigers are moving so fast they're leaving a wake. Once a tiger managed to come along side the raft and cut across in front of me.
The great whites while since the last patch swim deeper but they also can swim faster than the raft.
Some people just want to play a game with sharks lunging at you and others want them to act more like they do in real life. Despite the shark attacks you hear of, sharks aren't inherently aggressive and often circle you for a while and gradually start coming in to nudge if they get curious... unless you look like a seal, and a great white may charge you! Exceptions and modifying factors always exist, but that's the general idea.
They're definitely more aggressive about "bumping" the rafts but it's strange because even when letting them do it, I've only come close to falling out of the raft when bumped once or twice, maybe. I wasn't crouching, either. This was in .02 before h1, when they were even more aggressive then currently.
If one wants to wander out into the water around an island and don't like the sharks pestering them, wade around and kill them first. They don't respawn, so once you clear an island area (there's usually 3 loose ones, not attached to wrecks) you can swim around and fish for fish all you want unhindered.
I guess it's an issue for those who don't want to feel like they "have" to kill sharks, but ... eh. Someone recently made a mod that turns shark aggression off or something, so there's always that option.
