Stranded Deep

Lost my way in the fog ...
Well I've been playing since the game released and have prided myself on never getting 'lost' from my home island ...until tonight. I always put markers down on the beach of whatever Island I go to indicating the direction I need to go back towards, or of course my raft sitting there is a good hint. I use the sun, and moon to guide my way and have done really well even in the short rainstorms.

But tonight the fog got me. Couldn't see which way the angle of the sun was and a shark bumped my raft which caused me to look down and possibly get spun around a different direction. I thought I had it right but ended up on an entirely different island.

Anyone else get lost in fog? Looks like I'll be back-tracking and trying the neighboring islands to see which one's mine. I dislike how they all look the same from a distance and the distance is actually deceiving.

Still haven't seen a whale yet either. :(

I've yet to be stuck crossing duringa fog patch. Basically when the fog rolls in I stay put on whatever Island i'm currently on.

If i do get caught mid island hop and it gets foggy, I full plan on sitting still till it clears. Luckily the waves/current isn't a big factor if even existant.

Oh, and I was lucky and found a compass :)

I had a compass pre-hotfix patch but haven't been so lucky this go round yet. Fortunately I had a good axe on me (the rest of my slots filled with wood and rocks for my home island's house haha) ... I won't starve but I left everything on my other island so yeah - I'm hunting for home!

If they add currents and waves that push you in those rainstorms, gonna be a lot more of us lost at sea I think!

Found a compass not 2 hours ago. Have been beside myself deliberately rafting around in the fog and rain....

With the help of some graph paper.... :)

GL getting "home". Been there.....Restarted.

They need to add some kind of beacon maby attach a few flashlights on a pole using duct tape. Or something to make your home island stand out more from the infinite others that look almost the same.

I'm not sure a beacon would be viable for this game in the sense that navigation would be too easy and kill the "lost in the wilderness" vibe. Using a compass and dead reckoning, or people putting down sticks/palm fronds to mark areas fit more in the theme in my opinion.

Subnautica has a good beacon system, but it's more scifi and can explain it away that way. In Stranded Deep anything shy of a rediculously large beacon fire would be pointless as you couldn't see it from far enough away. And that kind of fire would go through resources available much too quickly.

But that can make it too easy.

In some ways I like that idea and in other ways I don't know if it's too much help. Maybe getting lost is in itself part of the game and the appeal. Now that I *am* lost I'm in motivated keep-moving mode rather than snail pace ferrying stuff back and forth mode. It's probably intentional. :)

The game really just needs to make those islands on the horizon look different from each other.

The 'billboards' for each island should be unique in some fashion.

In the mean time though, I found turning FOV all the way down and turning render distance all the way up has helped significantly in getting lost less often.

But yeah, let me share the harrowing tale of the first time I got lost in the rain/fog. It was at night and I was rowing for the next island. This was before the first patch, so some of you know what is coming next... POOF, my raft disappears and I get dumped in the inky black water. No problem, I'll just start swimming right? Wrong. Here comes the sharks.

Yes, more than one shark and all I had on me was a stone axe, a water bottle, and some potatoes. I was trying to save space for wood and rocks I needed to bring back on the return trip, see? But that axe, all it seemed to do was just piss the sharks off more. And while I am fighting the sharks, I lost my bearings and all the islands look the same at this point.

Then the rains start pouring out of no where and the visibility drops to next to nothing, I don't even get to look at those same-same islands in the distance. Or those sharks circling me. Oh, that's when the shark decides to bite on and take me for a ride? Of course.

So there I am bleeding, lost, and out numbered ... by a lot, more sharks come charging out of the darkness, some of them are Great Whites! Oh ♥♥♥♥, my blood just started a feeding frenzy and I am on the menu! That's when the moon hit that part of the night you get sometimes on stormy, foggy nights when the world just goes pitch black. Now the only way I know I am underwater is the sounds, only I don't know which way is up...

That's when the Great White shark gots its jaws on me and took me down into the depths...

I havnt got lost in the fog yet, but almost. It is, at least a realisitc mechanic, and a good incentive to find a compass! I once got lost before I had a compass, but by luck and a bit of reckoning I eventually managed to find my home island again, to great relief.

I totally agree, they need to fix the pop in, and the way that every island looks the same at distance.

I was on the raft, sunny day, paddling towards island and all of sudden it started to rain. Not to worry- I said to myself - I will just carry on.
Seconds later I was lost in the fog and two sharks were playing some sort of open water ball game with my raft.
It cant get any worst - I thought at the time.
The night has come however...

Fantastic experience - intense. I felt helpless in that raft there. More so that I accidentally threw machete into the ocean instead of hitting shark with it.
Gotta love this game,

Actually, I came across something interesting while at sea. I found a big white buoy floating around in the middle of the sea, and I believe it might be the center of the map area. Sharky removed me from my raft, rain came by to make the day more cheerful, and the next moment I'm standing on this thing. After everything settled, I picked an island and swam like hell. Shark still got me though. Luckily the island was one I visited before, and my island marker was located on it which allowed me to find my home island easily. Unlucky for me, I didn't have any bandages. Succumbed to severe blood loss.

Thanks for all the great stories of your own harrowing adventures at sea!

I think the risk is definitely part of the appeal of this game. You sit there on your tiny island with your precious pile of sticks and rocks (LOL), squinting at the horizon, trying to gauge how far away that next island is, asking yourself "Do I take a chance at it?" And the answer is eventually always yes ... either by necessity (you ran out of something) or because you've caught the treasure-hunting bug.

I'm happy to report I found my way back to my 'home' island (took a few misses) and along the way I filled my bag with some nice stuff including the coveted compass - yay! So now I will not fear the fog quite so much anymore!
