Can you reach end game without boss fights?

Looks like the point of the game is to just leave and to do that you just need to fix the plane but everything online says you need to defeat the squid to beat the game. How is defeating the squid related to leaving or do they mean to get an actually completed game you have to defeat the squid? I am playing with a buddy and we planned to get all the achievements until I accidentally grabbed a compass. Not sure if the achievements are the same on here as PS4 but I have to finish the game without using a compass. If I can just leave on the plane and it still considers the game finished than I can just get that achievement in my solo game.

Its not the most logical, but the premise is;
You need to beat a boss to learn blueprints to fix the plane and escape..

I'm not sure if I admin created trophies to speedrun, i cant remember that

Yes, you can finish the game with your buddy, to 'finish the game' (overall, for that achievement). If you want the specific achievement of escaping without using the compass for yourself, when I went for that achievement, I did have to fight all 3 boss' again, then 'escape' again (without using the compass). Note that this was prior to co-op being added to the game, so unknown if that makes a difference.

i finished game the first time and received the no compass achievement.
I definitely used compass, and cartographer.

though there is a small chance i didnt zoom on the compass tho... ;p
