Quick switch items?

Is there a keyboard shortcut or setting for switching between inventory items without going to the inventory? Like if I'm holding a Pocket Knife, and the next item in my inventory is a Rock, is there a way to just quickly switch to the Rock? I keep wanting to use my mouse wheel because it's become such a standard in the game industry.
