Then, as I explore outwards... I'll often make other tall houses...but specifically place them on the shoreline 'facing' where home island direction is. That way, when sailing, (unless I want to), I don't have to land anywhere to get my bearings. "ah-ha, I've been here before, home is that-a-way", and can just keep sailing on.
I'll also do similar for when I find a boss to fight (and I'm not ready to fight them yet). sail to closest island, and make a structure 'pointing to' that boss, so it's a little easier to find them again once I'm ready.
and like the earlier posts, you can use that label maker on things like your stick on the ground, giving them names like ''resources this way'' or ''home base this way'' or whatever you want.
