At least, I think so. So although he couldn't play via his xbox console... I think (for a while, until the game pass thing expires?) you could play together, if you both were using a PC. You would be using the Steam version of SD, and he would be using the Xbox for PC / Game Pass version of SD.
Again... that's something you'd have to investigate yourself. I just kind of heard about how Stranded Deep was somehow available on "Game Pass" recently. I don't know how that all works....
I really have no idea what the others are talking about, but Stranded Deep has P2P connection. That means it works across platforms, since it doesn't use platform-dependent multiplayer.
The pc version and the console version are not the same, there are several differences in the code, heck they even have differences in mechanics too, add to that the console version is limited in some areas like for example creating custom island in cartographer, consoles couldn't handle the same amount of placeables as pc, so they limited it in console version, so unless the dev team make both version the exact same in all mechanics and features which probably would be a ton of work, crossplatform won't happen :)
In the end, were you able to play from the PC and your son from the Xbox? I would like to try it with a friend
You just need to get the game pass for pc subscription. Well, I guess you would need to sign in to the xbox app on your pc first(if you have an xbox account, if not create one). After you get the subscription, search for games in the xbox app to see what games you want to play with others on xbox. Pretty much it.
