You can find that Map Mod on NexusMods, under Stranded Deep, and on the Mods subforum here.
If you aren't comfortable doing a mod, or just don't want to do anything not vanilla/standard to the game... this is what I used to do before I had the map mod. I'd sail (or paddle) from home island to the next one. Once getting setup minimally to survive (and deal with any animal threats on land), I'd built a two-story wooden shack pointing "back toward" the home island. Every island I'd visit, that would be what I would do. Make sure you add a roof--that roof is such a 'regular shape', that it's easily identified from afar as not natural. That way, as I progressed in that world, as I 'sailed by' an island, without even landing I could see that I had been there (so in theory I wasn't lost), and the structure would be pointing back to the "center" of the map / back to starter island.
After you install the mod using Unity Mod Manager, when you launch Stranded Deep, first a control panel for it appears (before you start or continue a game), where you can select or change some settings. Like whether or not all islands are shown on the map, vs. just the ones your character has "seen".
Once you start or continue a game, press F8 to 'show' the map overlay (your character stands still or maybe is attached to the rudder), and F9 to hide it again.
If you look at nexusmods' , you can see some sample images.
I find it very helpful when navigating at night/during a storm. It's a "little" easier to stay on course. Waves/dolphin bumps used to move me around quite often, and I'd be heading the wrong direction without Hantacore's map.
Note there are different versions depending upon what version of SD you are playing (i.e., some people stick with version .80.01). Also remember you need "Unity Mod Manager" as well.
