The Long Dark and Stranded Deep are all very good games. The Long Dark sets you in a "winter wonderland" after a geomagnetic storm sent your plane crashing down to earth, while in Stranded Deep, your plane comes tumbling down because Harry the wizard blew a hole in it. Both games are unique. When I played the Long Dark, I had this feeling like I was left here to die. That I would seep into "The Long Dark" like the people who use to live in the towns, and that the food, water, and tools would not last me forever, while Stranded Deep felt more like improvising with what I had and being resourceful with the materials I found. Turning fibrous leaves into lashing, and using the lashings to craft a crude knife. Everything is simple when playing stranded deep. Both games are also very beautiful, with high cliffs and amazing views in The Long Dark while there are sunsets and coral reefs in Stranded Deep. Personally, I couldn't decide either so I just bought both, but if you want a hardcore survival experience, go with the long dark and if you want a beach resort and tropical paradise with whales, sharks I mean uh... dolphins go with Stranded Deep

Sorry I can't really say much it's 1:26 in the morning I don't even know why I'm still up:cannedbeans::bottledwater:

Hi there man,
So, I got both games. And I like them both. However, it's been a while I last played either of them. I'll explain why & what I think of each of those games

The Long Dark (TLD)
The game takes place in Canadian wasteland. The story mode is yet to be released. It was originally promised to get released in Decemeber of 2015, then moved to Spring 2016, and then moved to early Summer. As you can see, it is heading towards the end of Summer and still nothng. This makes me not buy their games in the future. Just sayin.

Overall, the game got a lol more mechanics than SD. The exploration part can take a hell of a long time and every zone is different with its own obstacles. The game really captures the harsh Northern environment & the game is rahter beutiful in its cartoony grahics. Lots of adjustments have been made to color rendering & etc. The giant story mode patch (watch the trailer) supposedly brings so MUCH new stuff. I'm really looking forward towards Episode 1 content.

Game also has some challenges (like mini games to last a few in-game days/weeks). Those are objective based modes if you get bored of the overall sandbox.

Overall, I would give the game 7/10. Still more content is on the way (-1 point) and no game is perfect over all (another -1 point) & 7/10 is for VERY long developing process.

Stranded Deep (SD)

Loved the game at first. I think I spent a whole week playing just SD. It really caught my attention, again, at first. SD is a tropic survival sandbox with a story mode planned to be added. As for the game development stage, I find SD is not being anywhere close to completing unlike TLD which in my opinion is almost done and will be out of EA pretty soon.

The latest update, SD brought the weather back making the environment very pretty. I really like this change as it adds a nice touch to the survival aspect. Whereas in TLD you freeze to death, in SD you get hot & always thirsty. I find SD is a little harder to survive, especially at first, but a whole lot easier to sustain yourself towards the end game. Personally, it took me only about 25 ingame days to search thru 100% of the map. I had ~14-15 water stills (they collect rain water) & about 12 farms or so that gave me food. I have both in excess. The game was over for me.

On top of that, SD is more of a craft'n'survive sorta game. You collect resources, scattered around every islands & underwater ship wrecks, where as TLD is more of a DayZ style with scavenging for goods. You can craft some goodies ingame, but you can't build anything

Hence, the reason why I haven't played any pf the 2 recently, is due to the lack of new content. Ultimately, both games are fun in moderation. Once you understand every mechanic & every aspect of the game (crafted everything, explored, over came the hardest parts), the game gets boring until fresh content to try out (which will take another 30 minutes).

But, if you can't buy both, I'd say go for the TLD. However, get both games. They are both totally worth it.

I'd suggest you to check out the screenshot section & some YouTubes for those guides. This will also help you to make up your mind which game you want. But, get both.

Just my 2 cents

I own both games and to date I have put in 131 hours on TLD and 157 hours on SD.

When I first got it, TLD seemed new and different and I have put a fair amount of time into it.
At first there is motivation to get better clothing so you can craft using wolf, deer and bear skins which also gets you food so that was cool. The reason I eventually stopped playing is because I ended up having no motivation what so ever to stay alive, for me it is was just too bleak, so why bother. To make matters worse I was always getting stuck in blinding blizzards and having to retreat to a house for days or weeks at a time, sitting inside just listening to the howling wind rattling the windows <yawn>. I now get an idea of what cabin fever feels like and for me it was not fun anymore. When I was last playing, I would purposefully go searching for wolves and bears to please kill me so I would not have to play that depressing game anymore. They keep promising story content but I don't care much about that anymore, it just has no point for me.

Whereas playing SD, in my opinion, is quite the opposite, it does give me motivation to survive and try my best to thrive if I can. I have a lot of fun playing; testing and exploring (even without full content yet). When they added the island maker / editor that was all I needed for hours of enjoyment. They have also updated the crafting system and made preparing food more realistic and in my opinion these have been very positive moves forward in the game. I really like being able to craft things using all the materials available, makes more sense to me. If I get stranded on another island because of weather, no biggie I just keep going to find more materials, I never feel stuck. But of course, I personally love the ocean, living on the islands and the sun / rain, so it just makes me want to live there forever. Would be nice, no bills to pay and nobody bothering you at all (except Wilson of course), who wants to be rescued ;)

So just my opinion but I would pick SD, if you did not get that...

I felt cold and kinda depressed playing The Long Dark--it is a very immersive wintery experience.
Stranded Deep puts me on a warm, sunny, tropical beach --also immersive.

I'm usually in the mood for warm and sunny, so I usually play Stranded Deep.

TLD is really good to play when it is 100 (38C) outside and the air conditioner is failing ;)

I have both too, I love TLD, have played MANY hours, and still not explored 1/10th of the game, Its harsh challenging, grueling and brilliant.... I have not played for a couple of months, I have decided not to play until the next update. I am really looking forward to the update... it promises new wild life including moose and cougar... canoes, horses, seasons... so a break from the bleak winter... orchards - so farming possibilities, there will be melting lakes, so I would envisage different fishing strategies... I think this will provide the extra dimension that the game needs.

I have only been playing SD for a week, so far I love it and it has great promise, however, I can see that 'currently' it has far more limitations... am something like 23/24 days in and have explored 2/3 of my map, built my house, am self sustaining with 8 orchards, 3 stills, a spit and a smokehouse... It is relaxing and picturesque and so far so good. However, if this were all there was to the game, I could see myself becoming easily bored. I very much look forward to seeing it develop over time, if it continues as I hope, it will be fab.

The other Alpha game I currently love is 7 days to die... I don't play zombie apocalypse games but this one I love! So much to do, increasing difficulty, hunting, being hunted, skills, strategy, base building, mining... single player and multiplayer... I am totally gripped by this game and can recommend it to anyone who loves survival games.

TLD....by far....sry Devs...but that's my opinion on that....
But you have to decide for yourself...just go and have a look at some Let's Plays of both of the games.
Think of what you would prefer and buy that one ;-)

You know why I'm asking? Becasue I want to gfet two Train sim routes, but train sim routes( As they are, one of them costs $40) So I just want to check out which games I could get.
QueenTerrasen Aug 2, 2016 @ 1:22am
I checked my profile records on time spent, and I just wanna say that I have invested 28 hours into TLD & 59 hours into SD.

So, even tho TLD got a more content, I'd say stranded deep held my attention for twice as long.
