I usually build a spit over it so u can just leave the meat cooking unattended. You might be able to just hold the food and use it on the fire, never tried it personally though.

There are several ways to cook:

First, you need to skin the animal in question to get the meat from it. Simply craft a Crude Knife and then use it on the Boar, Snake, Seagull, Crab, Fish, or Shark to get some meat chunks. They go right in your inventory.

Once you have the meat, you have a few options depending on what type of fire you have.

1) For a standard Camp Fire or Fire Pit, drop the meat chunk on the ground. Start your fire, and then you have to manually hold the meat over the fire by using the Drag function.

2) A Fire Spit will allow you to cook one chunk of meat at a time. Have the meat in your hands, and then activate the Spit. If your fire is going, you'll hear a sizzling sound.

3) For Hobo Stoves and Smokers, you can cook several chunks of meat at a time. Take all of your meat you've skinned, drop it all on the ground, and then using the Drag function pick them up and either put them on top of the Hobo Stove or in the Smoker. Once they are all in there, light the fire and wait.

For all of these options, you'll hear an very short ringing alarm once the meat is done cooking.

I hope this helps.

Do you have a receptacle to catch the fresh water in ? ...either another bucket or an empty coconut ?
If you do, it can take a while for the water to convert from salt water to fresh, you should see a drop appear after a few in game hours, if not it could be a bug. I would try taking the buckets/coconut off and putting them back on then seeing if it works or not.
