How to correctly use piles in need of help

So if I can explain this correctly, please pardon my attempt.
When I make a pile of sticks, I have 9 on the ground and 8 in my inventory with no other items in backpack.
When I press "C" and chose the blue stick to make a pile, the white image comes us and then in writing you can not fit this in your... and it is covered by action words and it will only allow 2 sticks to a pile.
I have retried this with all the sticks on the ground, all of them in my inventory and can not add to the 2 stick pile.
So if anyone can follow what I have written... WTF is up with the piles and why no matter where I try to place the pile that same message comes up that "Your pile can not be stored in your..." what seems to be backpack but it allows me to still place it but only puts two sticks down.
Help please... this was supposed to be tested before applied to regular game or should not have some message that can not be read fully.

You only need to have a single pile-able item in your hand to start a pile, then place it on the ground and it acts like a permanent 50 capacity container until you remove all the items from it.

edit: to clarify, hold TAB to add/remove items... like a normal container.

i went in game to have a look at the piles and tried doing a rock pile created the rock pile place white ghost image which then showed 2 rocks, pressed tab to open nothing happens there is no slots to add more into the pile, even the look of the rock pile looks just like i have placed 2 rocks down on the floor ? It does not show any slots when opening with tab

For some reason I don't see the option when I have rocks. Does anyone have a list of what can and can't be piled?

I don't know if I have a comprehensive list; but what I have successfully "piled up" is this:

Rocks
Fibrous Leaves
Palm Fronds (not Palm Crowns)
Rope
Sticks
