lighting the fire?
I cannot for the life of me get a fire to light. I can't get the firelighting bar above at most about 1/4. I've tried everything I could find, i tried assigning keys to the fire lighting actions, i tried assigning the same key to both actions, I even bought an external multi-button mouse to play this game and i still can't light a fire. Not being able to light the fire means I can't eat anything but fruit and coconuts. I've played 50+ days into the game in easy mode but it doesn't feel like the real game without being able to build fires.

If anyone has any advice for the fire building mechanic, I'd appreciate it. Barring that, the devs need to scrap this current fire building mechanic because it destroys the game, go back to earlier modes where you just had to click a few times and not this alternating nonsense.

You need to click fast, alternating between left and right mouse button. Shouldn't take more than a few seconds.

I changed the keyboard keys to 'comma' and 'period' on an english keyboard because they are next to each other. Then start slowly and get a rhythm left, right, left right... keep going faster and faster keeping a rhythm and it should light. Keep your timing even and NOT 'fast as possible'.

Telling the developers to redo the fire lighting mechanic because you are struggling should not be necessary. There are many things that you have to try different ways in this game to figure out. My biggest tip is think about what you would do in real life and chances are that's what the developers are trying to achieve.

By the way I destroyed my first mouse trying it... bought a new mouse, changed it to keyboard, and then found that a good rhythm was the solution. All the aforementioned problems were my user error and not with the game ;-)

It can be done "fast as possible". I've always done that, just clicking away quickly. Never once burned myself or failed to light the fire. Usually takes 2-3 seconds. Everyone I watch play this does the same. Guess it's a user preference.

I only mentioned the rhythm method as an alternative because they was struggling. Also early game lighting is somewhat difficult until you get the hang of it. I tried different ways and the rhythm helped me, especially early game. That's why I provided and alternative to your suggestion although both are good. Let's hope they figure it out before too many coconuts are consumed... ;-)

You can bind both click actions to the same key so instead of alternating between 2 separate keys, you need only click one key repeatedly a few times to light a fire.

I also want to note that lighting the fire isn't a speed contest requiring you to click as fast as you can... Even while using both mouse buttons, you can casually click back and forth to get progress and sometime during the middle of the process give a small pause. then continue clicks to finish the process... It's not as bad as people make it seem.

Lighting the fire is not a speed contest, no. Considering you're stranded you would have all the time in the world. But we all have different methods on this. Some people like to play slow and take their time with all tasks, others are impatient ;)
Find the method that suits you.

It still feels like the higher I get the bar the faster it falls and i still can't get it above 1/4

I had to make a macro because my fingers refuse to do what I tell them to do for Repetitive Stress Injury mini-games like this.

If you set your keybinds to the same key/button, and make your macro hit that button every 0.17 seconds, you'll light your fire just fine.

I did the exact same thing with my programmable mouse. These are cheap and help a lot with more complex actions. Now I push the trigger button and the fire lights in a few seconds :D

Ugh, I hate that i'll have to use a macro just to do one of the core functions of the game. Thanks for the tip!

i would definitely consider rebinding the function. It sounds like maybe your keyboard is on the fritz? Or mouse... or whatever the default binding is. I use a Steam controller and never have issues. But yes at first it can be challenging because you keep burning yourself. Just keep at it, it will make sense eventually and become second nature.

Except for a lot of us with carpal tunnel issues from all of these types of games requiring repetitive actions to do simple tasks. We don't get to "get used to it", we have to FIX it with 3rd party solutions so we don't permanently damage a critical part of our body due to some "quirky mini-game" that doesn't need to be so quirky.

JEEEEZ you make it sound like the fire lighting is ruining your body as if you were being forced to do a military obstacle course or something.... rebind both fire keys to a single key and tap that key a few times to start a fire... no 3rd party ANYTHING required.... If you are so far gone that tapping a few keys is that painful or damaging then DON'T play video games. because as I see it, EVERY game requires tapping and multiple keystrokes to be able to play. or find a game like Runescape where one tap of the key allows you to chop and chop and chop on a tree until its either fallen or the inventory fills up, before requiring any further keystokes.

Well I finally got it to work but i had to map both actions to not to the same key but to the same mouse button (left) and lightly and rapidly click away. the default method of alternating strokes simply does not work for me and has never produced a result where the progress bar advances past 1/4

that trying to accommodate the feature destroyed your hardware is a pretty good indication that it needs to be redesigned.
