The compass on gyrocopter is off by always 22.5 degrees and they never fixed it ( i spent a lot of time on this game ) i noticed since navigating on every 45 deg. So if your objective is N-E you have to point N-N-E. If you travel on a raft and use normal blue compass its not a problem.
Always became lost the first time until i found out
Most people saw that I'm sure. but it's still an accurate map to navigate without gyro compass error
Which is why this game could do with some kind of dynamic mapping feature, where the player can add islands to an in-game map as they visit them.
At the moment, the more islands you visit the more likely you are to lose track of which ones you've been to already and which you haven't, even with the compass.
What I do: build at least a 2 story house ; but the important bit is the roof. That roofline is visible from a long way off; so you'll know if you've been to that isle before. What I tend to do is build near shore, and "point" the house toward home island. My 'normal' hut/2 story house is shaped like this.

What I recently heard someone does is build high--and then put a furnace up high. The furnace is always "lit" and they indicated they could see that beacon from a long way off as well. I haven't tried that yet; that might be interesting to do...
If you are more advanced into a game and have the gyrocopter (and plenty of fuel) you can of course island hop as well that way, to get orientation. But... I must admit I tried this once and got lost--took me a while to find my raft with loads of loot again, lol.
An in-game notebook / mapping feature--I agree that would be cool or interesting; but I could play devil's advocate and argue that if you really were in this situation, you wouldn't have paper handy, or a writing utensil; and even if you did, keeping that paper dry and safe could be a problem. Of course, quite a lot of this game is loosely based on reality in many aspects, so having a water-proof notebook is no more illogical than finding perfectly working solar lanterns in decades-old wrecks, too, lol.
I just copy paste the map in Paint and check islands visited. Can alt-tab during game to see map without having to use cartographer.

It's a magnetic compass so it could be the frame of the gyrocopter or some interference. Not the wind. But i think it's more a programming mistake by devs and wasnt intentionnal
