New, can't seem to harvest palm fronds

So I'm completely new to this game, I can't seem to harvest palm fronds. I chop down a palm tree, hit the leafy area near the top, and then "Palm" is the text over the leaves when I can hit 'E' to gather. However, in my inventory they name of them is "Palm", and there's a big question mark as the image, rather than the image for "Palm Frond" from the crafting menu. WT?!!!

*DERP* Nevermind, realized you need to hit "Palm" until it breaks apart into Palm Fronds. Yeah.

you must drop the palm tree bunch (with the? sign in your inventory) and keep hitting with an ax or knife to have 5 palm leaves

As a tip... if you need to transport those palm fronds to another island, its best to leave them in the bunch rather than break them up.... each bunch = 5 palm fronds (once broken down) and if you leave them bunched up, you can carry 4 of those bunches in a single inventory slot ( = 20 palm fronds) whereas, if you break them down you can only stack 4 leaves per inventory slot and would require 5 slots to carry the same amount.
