Little help needed
Just started a game (newbie here) and I tried to make a water still since on day 2 I am thirsty. Got everything except the palm frond. Palm trees are highlighted but not the fronds and can't cut one off the tree. What do I do?

Cut down the tree, cut off the top, and chop it down into fronds.

Thanks I kinda read a guide but not after I had to quit without a shelter which means I couldn't save my progress. Then when I attempted to start a new game I was placed into a loop of the crash and couldn't swim to the surface (life boat). Finally ended up in the life boat (don't know how) then got to an island. I now can't seem to get the craft menu to respond to key strokes. I am getting pretty frustrated at this time cause I've had to exit the game (no save) in an attempt to get information. Is this something that happens with this game to most players?

My advice is opt out of the beta program. Start on v0.48 stable, and get a hut built so you can save, then water still. Work on exploration and understanding the mechanics.

I also found that for the first few hours, I would build what I could then regenerate a new seed so that I could do it again and truly grasp the first 5 hour concepts. Which is isolating tools, saves, water, food, etc.

Just how do you start on v0.48 stable? There was no option of that when I purchased the game. I can't find that stable version in the store in STEAM. Sorry if I sound stupid but this is the first I have heard of v0.48 stable before. Could you please explain it to me?

Well, I've been reading on STEAM news on Stranded Deep and found that there is a .50 version. I still can't figure out how to get either of them instead of what I purchased. Also, is 48 beter or safer than 50v.?

The current version of the game is .48.01 So you're already playing it. When the game starts up, look at the lower right corner of the screen and the version number shows up there so you can see which version you are playing. The experimental version is .50 and I don't think it's good for new players because there will be strange bugs.

There isn't a good tutorial yet, so it can be difficult to get started. The water still and the shelter for your Save point both require palm fronds. Chop down a palm tree. Then chop at the palm frond bunch at the end until it comes loose. Then chop at the fronds a bit more to get 5 palm fronds. Once you build the water collector you can switch to using the small baby palm and yucca fiber bunches to provide the moisture to the water collector. You won't have to endlessly chop down palm trees for water.

You feed the yucca fiber bundles to the collector by holding them in your hand and aiming at the bottom of the collector until you see the instructions.

edit: also the baby palms and yucca respawn so don't worry about cutting them all. More will come back.

Thanks for your reply. Before I read it I finally got back in the game after waiting for it to decide I was in the life raft. Just couldn't swim to it. No progress. Anyway, then I figured out the palm fronds thing and built a shelter. Whew! Anyway, now I am stumped. I've tried a bunch of stuff. Couldn't find anything to make fire sticks to start the fire which I have built (fire pit) with sticks and rocks. It has a fire symbol on the kindling but there is no actions I can get started to have a fire started. I am so sorry to bug you guys but if you could help me out with this action hopefully, I can get the rest going. I find that the craft menu is a bit buggy. I can't always get it to come up even after 5-7 tries with the C key. Anyway, hopefully I will get better at it. :)

Oh yeah, that v0.48 thing online said to choose default in the options but it didn't help. Bummer!

Not sure of the exact issues you are having with the fire thing so I will explain how it is done and hopefully help you understand how to get that fire lit...

Once you have campfire crafted and placed where you want it you will need to craft kindling (2 sticks)... then equip the kindling so you are holding it... aim cursor at the fire pit and hold E to activate the fire lighting step.... You should now see a single stick (fire spindle) with your hands on either side of it , ready to start your fire.... left click the mouse until your avatar makes the motions 6 times of rubbing the stick back and forth and the fire will roar to life...

To add more fuel to the fire , equip sticks in your hand and aim cursor at fire pit and hold E button for each new stick added...

To add more materials to water still equip palm fronds or fibrous leaves in your hand and aim cursor at the lower portion of water still, hold E button for each new leaf added to still...

I reccomend using fibrous leaves for the water still (as mentioned before) because the young palms and yucca will respawn after a while for a continuous supply of usable materials... also FYI the fibrous leaves can also be used for burning in the fire instead of sticks ..

I have also noticed that sometimes getting the big crafting menu to activate is a pain... a solution i found is to aim your cursor straight up in the sky and quickly tap C key.

To change game versions go into library and right click on Stranded deep> select properties> select betas tab and it should show you which versions are available to you

Wow, thanks so much Gladi83465. You have helped greatly. I kinda figured out the fire but didn't know you could also burn the firbrous leaves for wood. I agree the crafting menu is a pain. I will try looking straight up next time. For the time being I have been double tapping the C key which sometimes helps. What gets my goat is that at times the crafting menu will appear but I can't interact with it at all. I have to exit out of it and try again. Grrr. But I am enjoying this game anyway.

There are several good tutorials on YouTube.

I have lately aquired a slightly different opinion on the palm fronds, even in the early game. Fiberous leaves are far more valuable (to me) as a material for lashing, cloth, etc..., and since I tend to need lumber for logs/sticks anyway I use up the palm fronds to fuel my fire and water still before I use up the fiberous leaves. Especially since there are less items built (once you get a basic shelter and water still or stills together) that need the fronds anyway. Yes the fiberous leaves are renewable, and are very useful as a fuel, however the palm fronds tend to stack up the moment you start cutting down trees for lumber and I am FOREVER hunting for yet another lashing! I see no point in hoarding them.
