Auto-filling of terrain doesn't seem to work anymore, or at least it didn't for me the last time I tried, but otherwise it's pretty much accurate.
A world consist of the whole map on the cartographer that includes around 40 islands. Down at the bottom you can choose to create a whole new world seed or just create an island. If you create an island it will give you a random shape. From there you use the tools to shape the island under terrain. The objects menu gives you all of the objects that you can place on the map.
There is a stranded deep discord for map makers somewhere in the threads. I will move a link to it under my thread Deezmaps by Deeznuts. If you would like i would be happy to spend some time with you in discord to answer your questions and show you by stream how to do these things.
