Crafting Levels

okay I'm new to Stranded Deep and can't figure out how to level up on my various crafting/building/hunting skills. It seems experience based but I can't craft items I need to gain experience! What am I missing?

Craft the things that are craftable at your level (IE: a few extra refined knives always come in handy as they will degrade with use) It doesn't take much to level up your skills.

You can check your character level by pressing "F" key (standard config) to call up your watch. Then click left mouse button.

sadly, early on, you may have to craft a few extra things you don't technically 100% need at the moment. for example, in order to get to level 2 for my water still, I had crafted a few things I needed (stone knife > refined knife, shelter, fire, kindling, a few lashings) and I ended up crafting a few extra spears which got me to level 2. I know the tutorial will have you craft a crude hammer, but I turned the tutorial off...I always find hammers in loot from wrecks!
