Placing Farms
Hi,

So I'm just starting to experiment with farms, but it seems you can't build a farm on top of a base piece? I've laid out a nice little base area and was hoping to build a farm but seem it MUST be on ground?

Any tips or advice please?

Thanks!

Don't know about the farms, don't think it will work. But, I've built smokers and water stills, then after crafting them, out a floor base "over" it, so it looks like the item was build on your floor. If that might help at all..

Yes you can only build them on the ground, it would be nice to have them all neatly laid out on platforms :)

Personally I try and find an empty flat spot, usually fail miserably and end up with a line that's all higgledy piggledy

The thing I don't get, is why you can only grow 1 thing in such a huge plot. Most games, the plot is roughly a quarter to half that size, and allows 4 plants.

Now that's a very good question!!!

For what they have to grow, plot size is not a problem. You can extend plots into rocks to keep them in better order. The water stills needed for the garden also serve as a way to restock your water bottles used for travelling.

That's true Thomlovesue, I never play with less than 5 still, that's before I start farming. Once you travel with clay flasks(5 sips each) you need to have enough water, otherwise the waiting to refill can be worse than a snake bite, to me, that is.

heh, I'm only JUST about to build my 3rd still... guess I better drop at least 2-3 :P

yeh, 2 stills each on both home islands and 7 stills for the garden. I hear you MASON13....

wow, that must seriously burn through your fibre loads!

I never use fibre for water stills, only palm fonds. I don't even use the fibre of my own island. Every time they respawn, I will chop it down, and leave it there. I have many a times needed fibre unexpectedly, and that "storage" helped out a lot. The other fibre I harvest from islands, I store in a crate. Also, when you get to a big island, 1st harvest all the fibre. Then carry on harvesting and scouting shipwrecks. You will find the time spent there, may have you harvest two or three times, boosting your fibre a lot!

I have so much fibre now, I have about 3 crates full and I have 6 water stills fully stocked and all 12 my farms are the metal ones and fully filled.

I have about 5/6 crates of the heads of palm trees, the ones that show the ? icon. I ONLY use them for my fires because they refill the fires double of what fibre does.

Since fibre / palm fonds fill the water the same, I rather use fibre for the water.

And yes, the first thing I do on every island is harvest all the fibre whilst I'm hunting the Crabs, Snakes and Boars. I'll usually clean up an island 2-3 times in my first harvest of the island and then at least once more if I have to return to finish collecting my stuff. That's so much fibre you can't possibly use it all up.

When I'm away, I fill all my farms and stills but when I'm at home, I only keep them half full at all times because the rain really brings a LOT of free water. I'll usually end up storing excess water during the rain storms in clay pots to then ration out between storms.

The fibre is a never ending supply and even with using as much fibre as I like for cloth and ropes I still can't use it all up :D

Not really. Yes. to start filling all 11 stills for 44 units of water. But after that, it is the same consumption of water that you have. I just have a bigger emergency quantity.

I'm now properly settled in and 12 farms are literally 1 too many. I have 2 farms for the Ajuga's cause I thought they were 2 per diving potion but they're only 1. So I'm going to break the one down.

For stills I'm slowly making my way up to 10, that's 40 water or 8 jars which is 2 stacks, leaving a final stack for "Rain Water" collection/rationing.

I was out at a new island and when I got back after 7 days, it was the first time I had to fill all my farms. Needless to say, it gutted my fibre supply :P
