but to answer your question, make sure you take off on a FLAT surface, I find taking off on slanted surfaces causes a crash.
Still using my 2 x 3 raft with mast and rudder. Works great for me.
also sorry to disappoint but the ending is currently only on the console version of the game :( coming soon to pc tho! so dont waste your time looking for the aircraft carrier just yet. and like you say you dont even need the copter for it which is nice.
I would say the gyro copter is most useful for local island hopping, its much faster than a raft but it uses loads more fuel than a boat motor/sail making it expensive to do long trips with.
Helicopters are extremely difficult to fly, I learnt this when i started flying rc helis. they have 3 axis: ie up and down, left and right, forward and back...
put a marble in a small plate and try to keep the marble in the centre while holding the plate in the palm of your hand, that is the principle of hovering a helicopter
