Birds and Snare Traps

Can someone pls tell me how they work? do you have to keep a certain distance? do they only work so often or on certain islands? different weather conditions?

I build 6 on a island on my single player world and they all caught quickly but on my multiplayer world im still waiting for them to catch.

Ive only managed to catch a bird if I put them right under a place I see birds circling... Im not sure if you just catch less in other areas or if I will never catch anything in the other traps (they give nothing back if you destroy them).

Best place is to note which rocky area on the beach they land on frequently. After you catch one, take the bird and another will get caught soon. There are no tricks to it that I'm aware.
