Taking an extra small raft on your larger raft.
Not sure if this kind of thing has been posted here before but I wanted to have a smaller raft to take on trips on a larger supply holding raft.
Not possible to simply dump one on top of the larger raft but this works........
Yet to motorise it but it does work fine...simply lift it in and out of the larger raft.

I once had a similar idea although it was not a hole in the middle but a gap in the front so that you could push a little raft and perhaps barrels and tires, but I forgot about it again.
It's a great idea and looks awesome Yard :)
How is the steering and speed of the big raft when the little raft is in the hole?

What!?! Brilliant! This is a game changer as far as exploration goes.

I wonder if it's possible for a shark to dislodge the smaller raft?

I also began with the idea of a gap in the front but that wouldn't work when reversing.....that's what inspired this design, it works forward and back.
The steering is heavy which is what you'd expect for a raft of this size, but the extra raft seems to have no effect on speed or manouverability itself.....the steering remains the same with the smaller raft in place or not.
I haven't moved the propulsion to the rear of the large raft yet which will improve steering.

I'm happy with how it's turned out because I intend to play a mobile, mission based game rather than a sedentary shelter based game, for this current game at least.

Yeah good question...I've had sharks ramming this raft but they haven't hit the small raft yet........that would be interesting to see.......I suppose they could flip it out.
But that's one of the reasons for having a smaller raft, if it is flipped it's an easy matter to right it again.
And simply lift it back into place........unless it's sent flying into the distance of course.

Interesting, I've only made very basic rafts because I did not know you could build them like this. How do you do it?
Charles (Banned) Aug 18, 2017 @ 4:47am
Well the basic physics are exactly the same as in any simple raft.
I suppose it's only limited by your imagination.......but one good tip is to leave one or two base components without a floor to create a recess in the middle of your raft.
You can use that recess as a hold to place crates in...or barrels and other items for transporting between islands.

For the rafts, does the material (Tyre, barrel, bouy ball, etc.) effect the speed or durability? And does the floor you put on it have any weight, or do they all weigh the same?
Charles (Banned) Aug 18, 2017 @ 4:09pm
All componants are the same as far as weight and manouverability goes......but having said that if the raft is not symmetrical you'll experience steering issues.
You don't need flooring on all bases but it's best to make whatever flooring you have balanced or symmetrical.

how do you get the smaller raft out?

Simply lift it out and lift it back in when you're done.

Thanks for the advice, I made a simple 3x3 with room for chests, but it seems to be sinking beneath waves with 8 chests and 2 lanterns loaded onto it. It was still functional, just not something I trust. Would making it bigger allow it to hold them better or do I have to just take less chests?

Got a screenshot of what I am talking about

OK the crates alone won't cause the submergence......but other items like lanterns might.
BTW the crates will fit snuggly into place parrallel with the front of the raft rather than parrallel with the sides of the raft.
Whenever you experience that kind of submergence problem it's some other item besides the crates causing that effect....tyres, food items such as boar or stingray, lots of miscellaneous items that aren't stowed away in crates will cause sinking situations.
Not all items will be a problem....you'll just have to work out which ones are 'heavy' and which ones aren't.

Yes, I had each side packed with 4 crates each, but removed 2 from each side to test if it helped the issue, which it didn't lol. The previous screenshot had no lanterns or other materials on it, just crates.

This is happening only when tranversing islands, it will dip into a wave or the wave will crash over top of it.

Crashing through and under waves is quite normal....it won't make you sink.
But from the screenshot it's clear you need to lose weight.......maybe running around islands and a little less shark meat might help...:steamhappy:

@Yard C. Ape not bad. and you did the proper setup for crates. i have one stigma against it though, you don't have your initial raft UNDER the created raft. it really helps me out personally, since after i get like 15 crates or so it keeps my boat afloat.
