So did you not actually catch a marlin?

Not with a fishing pole, did shoot one with a speargun and tried to skin it but it sank.

Same here...
Sharks will float when you kill them, so I guess the fishing rod is the only way to bring it back whole.

Just swim down and grab it and take it to the shore.

Tiger sharks will float but, for me anyhow, White sharks sink when killed... No big deal to swim down, right click (and hold)(will allow you to drag items) and drag that shark onto the beach where i can then gather that valuable meat and leather.

Yeah, but the big problem is that great white sharks and marlins spawn in very deep water, far from shore. Looking for an easier solution, since they sink faster than I can swim.

Well, the marlins don't appear to have any interest in fishing rods. So to deal with the sinking issue I ended up hacking it to death with my hatchet. Managed to grab it before it sank. Here's a picture of it on my raft that capsized when I tried to put it on board.

And here's a picture of it after I swam to shore.

Next to it you'll see the tiger shark that pursued me as I swam for my life. Off in the background, a little to the right you can see my ship as it awaits rescue. All in all, very much not worth the effort.
