The upper portion is where you drink the water and the lower portion is where Palm fronds or fibrous leaves are added ...
Hold the leaves in your hand and aim cursor at lower portion of the still and hold E to place more plants to the still...
The still will hold a maximum of 4 drinks of water and also 4 maximum leaves at a time....
For each leaf added to the still, 1 unit of water will be produced, so a good practice is to add an additional leaf for each drink you take from the still.
It's also a good idea to craft several stills (as each one only holds 4 servings)... I usually build 4 to 6 stills to ensure I have enough water to completely fill up my hydration when needed.
Palm fronds work but I prefer to use fibrous leaves as the yucca and young palms respawn over time whereas the palm trees do not.
If you manage it right, you should never have to drink coconuts except in extreme emergencies.
