How to Recover Deleted Saves
Have you accidentally overwritten a save you wanted to keep?
This is guide I made on how to recover deleted saves.

This will only work if you have not saved the new world you created (by using shelter to save).

My copy of Stranded Deep v0.37.02 saves in “Documents\Stranded Deep\Data\Experimental” yours may save in a different location but the instructions will be the same regardless.

Steps:
1. Copy the entire save folder to another location as a backup.
2. Go to the folder named a big string of random numbers (this is your save file and the string of random numbers is your steam id).
3. You will find a file called “your steam id.json_BACKUP” this is a backup of your old save file.
4. Rename this file and remove the “_BACKUP” from the file extension.

The next steps are only necessary if you created a whole new map instead of resetting the currant map.

5. Copy the renamed save file to another location on your computer (it will be permanently deleted by the game during the following steps if you don’t move it).
6. Open the save file using a text editor.
7. Use the find function of the text editor to search for “WorldSeed”.
8. The find function should find a piece of text which reads “WorldSeed":"a number” copy this number.
9. Close the text editor and start the game.
10. In the main menu click on “cartographer” this opens the map editor.
11. In the map editor click on “create new world”.
12. This will bring up a window asking you to enter a world seed (a seed is a string of numbers that influences the generation of the world).
13. Paste the number you just copied into the seed entry box.
14. Click ok.
15. Now quit the game and open the Stranded Deep save location again.
16. Go into the folder named your steam id.
17. Your save file .json will be gone.
18. Move the copy of the save file you made earlier into the save folder.
19. Close the save folder and run the game.

If you followed these steps correctly your world should load up normally when you click continue.

Trouble shooting.

Continue button doesn’t appear.
Cause:
Your save file is in the wrong location or has the wrong name.
Solution:
Check that your save file is in the right folder and has the right name and file
extension.
The file should be named “your steam id.json”
The file should be placed inside the folder called “your steam id”

World doesn’t load properly (e.g. floating plants, stuff everywhere).
Cause:
You created an entirely new map instead of resetting your original map. So, the new
terrain and the items/landscape from your previous world don’t line up with each
other.
Solution:
DO NOT save your world in the messed-up state. This will permanently damage the
save.
Follow the extra steps of my guide for people who created an entirely new map (step
5-19).

I hope this guide is useful to someone.
