Stranded Deep

Home Improvement... D'oh!
Have you ever started a larger building project, stop to look it half-way though and think, "Wow, this is looking a little strange and janky..." only to notice all of your walls went up backwards?

:steamfacepalm:

It took three islands worth of clear cutting to get this far, and I can't recover any materials if I tear it down... so I guess this is a good time to switch over to the experiemental branch and start over.

Mind you, I'm not complaining... It's entirely my fault for not paying attention to what I was doing.

The only reason I had for not going over to the new experiemntal branch was just because I was making progress in this playthrough and didn't see any point in starting over. Now I have plenty of reason make the switch :steammocking:

***Again, this post is not intened as a complaint or commentary about the game itself... it's purely anecdotal, and the thought gave me a chuchle so I thought I would share it.***

I always save right before I start to build and reload the game if it doesn't turn out right :)
Yeah planks is the most expensive and time consuming building material, I have always wondered why you only got 1 plank from a log, in many other games you get 2-4.
Some of the walls are a bit hard to tell which way they turn, it would be nice with a small arrow pointing outside when placing them :)

Yeah, I will definately adopt that practice from here on out. It was almost heart wrenching when I realized I didnn't pay close enough attention and my house was effectively inside out. :)

While planks are definitely harder to produce compared to sticks, clay bricks are the top tier construction material for a reason. You need 4 bricks for each foundation, 2 clay for each brick and have to deal with sharks and other underwater hazards.

Yes but still I can gather the same amount of clay for a foundation and transport the material back home much easier than with logs for planks - 8 clay which is needed for a foundation takes up 2 slots while 4 logs needed for a plank foundation takes up 4 slots!
Anyway the best comparison is wood/driftwood vs planks, planks cost 4 times as much as the 2 other :)

Actually I set up plank stations on almost every island so logs can be converted into planks for transport. After chopping down all those trees I have a lot of 0.25% durability refined axes for those stations.

You do the same with clay, setup a brick station if you want, use a shark repellent and clean every clay node around 1 or 2 islands in the 12 hours it last.
I rarely ise refined axes, I usually end up with more leather than I can possibly spend, so I always use picks instead of axes, they can do everything a refined axe can, but also mine + they are for some reason twice as fast as an axe on driftwood piles.
My biggest problem with planks is that they unlike real life use more wood to make and often leave several islands looking like a desert since you can only make planks from palm logs.
For example I once made a fairly big harbor and a couple of storage buildings from planks, they cost more than half of my islands in the map all their palm trees to make - It was just so sad to look at those island when I passed them on my raft *lol*
