Ran out of fibrous plant on first island, still in tutorial?

I just started playing and while following the tutorial I've used all the fibrous plant and trees that have it on the first island. I'm only to the point of creating a water trap, and can't complete it. Do I really have to try to make it to another island this quick into the game? I've only been playing for like an hour and most of that was stumbling through the controls.

You either got a real crappy island start or you are missing something. If you cant complete a water trap that means you have only needed 3 lashings so far(I think): 1 for the knife, 1 for the shelter, and 1 for the thing you make with the coconut to use to make the water trap, then you need a 4th one to make the water trap.
Did you cut the Yucca trees? They yield 6 fibrous leaves each and I usually get 3 of them on each island giving a total of 18 leaves just from those.

One possibility is crafting them directly from palm fronds. I mean, if you can get fibers from young palms, why not the mature ones?

The Yucca palm grow back (2 days I think). Or you raid other Islands for their fibrous plants, just as in the good old pirates days.

Doesn't young palms and yucca still grow back in a few days? Mature palms do not grow back, so use them wisely.

Looks like you're missing a lot here. I ran into the same problem. In order to follow the tutorial you need to craft a water still. for this u need tools like knives and axes for harvesting (about 2 ropes, even more when they break). the still needs a coconut flask that requires another rope. also u need a extra rope for the recipie itself. Then you need 1 cloth, which costs another 4 fibrous leaves (=1rope) itself, but in order to craft cloth u need a loom, which needs another 4 ropes to build. so all in all, you need around 9-10 ropes 36-40 fibrous plants at this point. You can't find that stuff on the starting island, and i gotta say it feels kinda sad, when you need to hop to another island just because u need fiber. idk. Also the starting island doesnt seem randomized at all. I started the game once as intended and once with a "random" world. Both times i landed on exact same starting island.

You mention having to make a loom, to create cloth. On every island I have ever landed on, there is always 2 cloths just laying near shore to pick up. You might have to explore the shore all around, they might not be exactly at your landing spot, but they always exist. Also, cloth is sometimes found in crates on wrecks.

I see no problem in completing the tutorial on starting island. Of course, if you choose to create things you don’t quite need yet (per the tutorial) yes, you may have accidentally prioritized badly, and need to travel to another isle for resources. But that’s the fun of survival type game, lol. If you decide a 3 story house is more important than a water still, well....

You can indeed find that stuff on the starting island, unless you have some sort of bug.
I find 2 cloth on every island, even the starter island. You dont need to make an axe and a knife before making the water still, the knife will be plenty. So by my count you need 4 lashings(16 fibrous leaves) to get to the point and to make the water still.
1 for knife, 1 for shelter, 1 for coconut flask, and 1 for the still.

The tutorial is wrong in my opinion. When first arriving on the first island, the first thing I do is craft a stone tool and harvest all palm saplings and yuccas. Since each respawns in 2 days, it pays to start the respawn activity as soon as possible. This will give you 2-3 harvests of fibrous leaves by the time to make a still. Also, do not use fibrous leaves for anything other than lashings at first. I know that they can be burned or made to cloth, but don't waste them when they are at their most precious. Also, a loom or tanning rack uses too many lashings before you have your still.

Usually there is "just enough" fibre to make enough lashings to get to the water still; but I agree sometimes it's very tight. I recall desperately searching wrecks to loot containers, hoping one of them would have some lashings inside.

If you get really unlucky, and have at least one unopened container in a wreck left, you could cheat a lil bit. The container content is spawn on first opening, so gather containers, drop them next to your shelter and save. Open them. Unlucky? Reload and open again.

There seems a fair few comments about how easy the game becomes as you become more established. This honestly happens in most games I have ever played that required resources to be collected (not all granted, but most)... excluding Pacman of course... and maybe Pong .

I am thinking the rest of the game should be balanced to this beginning level, that way the game would become much much more difficult for those people who find it easy, of course, game balancing being the bane of existence for many games... excluding Pacman... and maybe Pong?
Admittedly this is mostly online games I have observed and it would seem single-player game developers don't have to worry about balancing issues as much after release.
I think because fewer people are as persistent in their opinions about having a level playing field due to differences in skills, reflexes and game mechanics... this would also exclude Pacman, but if my brothers are anything to go by not Pong.

Anyhoo, I digress...sometimes...maybe. Like most games it is harder, in the beginning, to get established while at the same time learning the mechanics of the game.
I am sure in time you may end up joining the crowd in saying it is way too easy now and needs to be made much more difficult, it's just those early days that are more challenging.

Although I do fear for any new players getting the game if it gets balanced to make it difficult for those who have been playing for years.
I guess that is why they call it balancing though. :)

6 years later, same issue. Treid the game for the first time now and ran out of fibrous plant.. Tried making it to another island but there was a shark. Of course. That was a dead-end for me so to speak.

Quite the game and uninstalled...
