There's a post in the Experimental Forum covering this...

I can repeat it here for ease of finding.

Put the object you want to hotkey in your hand and then press & hold the hotkey until you hear a sound. It is now keyed.

However, it still takes up a backpack slot too and if you drop it from the backpack, it also leaves the toolbelt. Not sure yet if it re-hotkeys when picked back up.

That's one method. Another way is to select the item in your inventory and hold a hotkey to assign...

Woe is me, I spend 20 minutes looking for an answer to this question when all I needed to do was hold the number key half a second longer!
Things on a tool belt shouldn't take up a backpack slot..it's illogical. I hope this changes in one of the next updates, even if it means downsizing the 'hotkey' tool belt.

I agree with this. Items on your belt are on your belt, not in your backpack. What's the use of a quick slot besides combat? I can switch items just as fast from the backpack, there should be a benefit of extra space from making a tool belt. Otherwise it's just a waste of mats.

Also, when playing co op, players using a controller are limited to 4 slots total. There is no use in the last upgrade.

Actually, the d-pad limitation *could* open up a world of possibilities, if the code would allow it.

Starting a fresh game, up on the d-pad opens a 2-slot "container", symbolizing your right & left hands as you likely were NOT wearing a backpack on the plane.

Little gathering, little crafting and boom... Pressing up shows the 2-slot hands, pressing left shows a 1-slot (with 3 more unlockable) toolbelt.

A little more crafting nets you a 6-slot shoulder pouch, accessable by d-pad right, and further crafting still unlocks the d-pad down backpack.

Yeah, that's a lot of slots but tjey could utilize the new stamina bar in that each one filled drains stamina a bit faster, so you gotta either empty out to move faster/run longer, or be the new NEW turtle in the game all because you had to carry a whole island's resources in one trip.

I do wish it wouldn't take up a backpack slot. Its Sept. 2019 now. Just started playing last week.

In retrospect, does the tool belt increase slots available in your backpack? So glad I found the answer here regarding the hotkey setup. There is nothing on the wiki on this.

The tool belt would be great as an extension of the backpack. As it is know I think it's pretty useless. The backpack menu is already quick and smooth no need for hot keys.

the tool belt is great all though a bit useless to have 10 slots available with only 9 slot in backpack, but the main prob is how it reflect on the mechanic of the game, not only we almost always have a full backpack because of all the loot, if you drop the items that you bind on the ground instead of in a crate, your bind disappear, (not big of a deal coz like commissar said, backpack menu is really smooth) but for me, it kinda is big of a deal coz of the way i play, i like how it truly bind the tool you choose, for example if you choose the weakest pick to bind out of 3, the bind is truly only for that 1 pick, that i like but could i simply suggest to keep the binds on it no matter if you drop items on the ground or in a crate, it would make a big diff for me and this toolbelt would be useful a bit,so if i dont grab the correct 1stonetool that i binded on the ground, when i hit my key, it simply wont work and have to rebind it only in that case. that would be the perfect toolbelt mechanic in my pov and alot more logical with the game mechanic, thanks

what i mainly mean with toolbelt mechanic is that personally with the game mechanic, i kinda only use 3 or 4 binds maximum never more mainly because of the way i play, when i arrive on a new island, i loot everything, use my stonetool and axes at maximum capacity before i craft something else with them, all the extra crates i grab, i never loot them, i leave them next to my shelters so that if 1 day i need something in peticular i can simply quit and relog until i get what i want in the crate,so i mainly have my 9 crates that i drop on the island when i arrive and the extra ones on my huge raft, but thats more late game. so, i never really have extra crate to store my loot and i dont like to have more than 3 diff item in my backpack, usually speargun, speargun arrows and stonetool or axe, so i dont see how using 6 or 7 bind keys with all my looting makes any sens at all but again thanks for this amzing update i enjoy the game again, thats just a detail

I have to agree with et al. I REALLY love the game but the tool belt is less than useless for me. I don't even bother to make it till I have excess stuff to build my crafting skill. It would be awesome and actually useful if it did not take pack space. BUT this is a really minor gripe. Overall, great game.

Yeah the toolbelt is pretty useless at this point, you bind something and it's bound to <exact object type> instead of <category type> and easily loses it's binding so you have to do it every time you need to free up an inventory slot, which bound items shouldn't use... no point in having a toolbelt if you can't hang your tools on it.

Agreed. I'm just hoping the toolbelt is a "work in progress" and the devs will make it useful as time goes on.

So, any news on this? Almost a year has passed and the belt is still completely useless.
bigfr0g Aug 20, 2020 @ 2:35am
Wow that is sick, you guys are waiting over an year that the items assigned to a belt aren't in your backpack?

i came from stranded deep ps4 and there it is like that! now i bought it on pc because of the new map layout... and then i discovered this, so stupid! why can this be done for console and not on pc?

also all my assigned hotkeys always dissappear again after a reload., also when i drop an item.

the game seems more alpha then on console even if it already exists more then 4 years, lulz
