Storage Crates
You know the ones found on shipwrecks why cant i simply fill them up with what i want, for example if i want one of them to store nothing but palm fonds, it doesnt let me, it allows 3 stacks and then no more can be entered despite the fact theres enough empty slots available.

then....

even more confusing, if anyone can explain, i cant mix and match certain items together and i have no logical reasoning as to why this is the case, and its not that the items cant be placed into the chest, since if i put same item into a brand new empty one it allows it.

Clearly im missing something with the way these work, can anyone shed some light perhaps ?

Just like your backpack, there are limited slots. Your backpack has 9, the crates have 3. Each slot can hold a variable number of ONE item. For a tree log, just one, for water jars and most other things, you can put four per slot. For arrows you can store 24 per slot.
You obviously have to take out the items from the crates you find. Then refill with your stuff. Now, you know you can hold 9 crates in your backpack - thats 27 slots!!! more than enough for every different item that you are likely to need.

In your example you are talking about palm fronds. You can store 12 palm fronds per crate. 108 fronds if you are lugging 9 crates...

Each to their own and a great answer happysundays. For me, I have never needed to put palm fronds in a crate. Come to think of it (and genuinely no BS), I have never eaten a fish either!

Hahaha XD it is hard to catch a fish using fishing spear and crude spear, so I have a suggestion on the other forum that they should craft a fishing net using a banana fiber(another suggestion in the forum)

Never eaten a fish? I can catch like 20 with a fishing spear in a few game hours. It's not that hard really

Fish is easiest food source if you ask me, just before sun goes down catch five fish, throw em on hobo stove, click to sleep (ting - fish breaky) eaten and water from water still in one throw, sleep at 10pm, all set for a full day...
