Stranded Deep

Just heard about the Discus and Archerfish
Keep in mind I don't have the game so don't ask me about stuff like that but am considering buying it... It has just one fatal flaw.

"Archerfish" and "Discus" are not Saltwater fish. I don't exactly know why Archerfish and Discus are in the Ocean when Discus are found in the Amazon Basin and Archerfish are found near the Brackish Estuaries of Australia and rarely venture out into the Ocean and are sometimes found up Freshwater Streams. Archerfish have a Labyrinth Organ (A Primitive set of Lungs) which allows it to thrive in poorly oxygenated water or areas where the water level is low (Esuaries which contain plants such as Mangroves). They can also spit drops of Water at insects hanging from branches (Which the open ocean lacks). Enough with the Lesson on Archerfish. Discus are schooling fish that reside in the Amazon Basin (As mentioned above). They cannot survive in a Saltwater environment and are often shown off by breeders or auctioned with prices ranging from $30 to about $1,000 (Beautiful fish, look it up! Same with Bettas). You may as well add Freshwater Angelfish in as they live in the same environment as Discus and often hang out with them for protection.

I am a very interested Aquarium Hobbiest and just generally love Marine Animals. This Discussion is not meant to hurt anyones feeling, toy with their emotions, or start fights. It is for the Dev's (If they even check the Discussion board) and really just to tell some interesting facts about Discus and Archerfish.

There are tons of diffrient species of each fish. so chances are there's probably a discus that lives in saltwater. maybe an archer too!

Not sure about this information, but like I said, chances are there's probably a saltwater Archer/discus.

The devs are aware they are not native, however both of them can live just fine in salt water, and they are pretty, so they probably won't be removed :P

I happen to have a Discus in my salt water tank right now. They won't spawn in it but they live just fine. Archer fish WILL spawn in salt water and frequently do in the wild as well.

I have never heard of a Discus that can live in Saltwater, I wasn't all that sure about Archerfish but I've never heard of them living in Saltwater.

I cannot wrap my mind around Freshwater fish living in a Saltwater environment and do well, they've adapted specifcally for Freshwater for millions of years.

Proof for millions of years?

Anyway, Bullsharks (or is it goblin sharks?) can swim in freshwater eventhough they get born in saltwater. there's been a report of a Great White swimming from south flordia up into missouri. near Saint Louis. so there's proof that even Great White's can go in freshwater for a period of time.

Certain breeds of discus from near the mouth of the amazon are routinely found in the ocean, archer fish are even known to live and breed in the shallows outside the river mouths in saltwater.

For my discus its a low saline content in the tank right now, closer to the great lakes than the ocean, where lots of freshwater and saltwater fish mingle.

My proof is their ancestors have adapted for surviving in Freshwater for millions of years. They didn't come from a lab.

It is Bullsharks yes, Bullsharks can live in Freshwater but they have to urinate more to be able to go into a Freswahter river. Which is why you don't see them all that often in Freshwater Rivers. There has been a sighting on a Bull half-way up the Mississippi! I'm fairly certain their Pups grow in Estuaries to escape predation.

I assume this is Wild-Caught Discus your talking about? You mentioned your Discus don't spawn in your Aquarium so I fairly certain they weren't captive-bred.
fluxtorrent May 23, 2017 @ 10:09am
Nope, it won't spawn because of the saline content. It lives just fine but it won't spawn. It's parents were wild caught though.
Armypyro May 23, 2017 @ 10:14am
That is quite cool. You acclimated your Discus from Freshwater to Salt?
fluxtorrent May 23, 2017 @ 10:22am
Yup. Again very low salinity (2 grams per liter) But it's way less than what some of them get exposed to in the wild.

For me, imo, the bigger anachronism may very well go to the Frontosa. IIRC, they're only native to Lake Tanganyika, a freshwater lake in Eastern Africa.

Kudos to you for your knowledge about these fish! I feel like maybe the devs, if they felt like it, could find tons of fish that fit the criteria of being pretty AND being native to that type of environment.

By the way, OP, have you ever heard of/played Endless Ocean? I feel like you'd enjoy it.

I have not heard of Endless Oceans. I will have to take a look, thanks for suggesting it!

I feel the Developers could easily add a school of Jacks, Tuna, Salmon once every great while, Eels, Octopus, all sorts of Saltwater Angelfish, Whales, Swordfish, Barracuda, who knows. They could even add a Reef in, there are some magnificent fish to be found. Lionfish, Black Tip Reef Sharks, Rays and Skates, a whole assortment of Tangs, Frogfish, Stonefish, Wolf Fish, Gobies, Clown Fish, Cleaner Shrimp, Puffers, loads of things that I'm sure are destined for this game. Not sure where in the world those Islands are based on but they could add in some Lampreys, Hag Fish, Dolphins, maybe even some Abyssopelagic and Bathypelagic creatures that can surface dead or dying such as Anglers, Grenadiers, Oar Fish, Squid, Jellyfish, Shrimp, Goblin Sharks, Six Gill Shark species, and such. Squid and other Deep Water critters (Such as some Six Gill Sharks and other crustaceans) follow Krill (I think its Krill) to the Surface at night and come up in relatively shallow waters. Theres alot of fish in the Sea (Pun intended). Sure are lots more than the Shark and Whale species in the game. Some very interesting fish and creatures. Maybe add in some Tanslucent Abyssopelagic creatures in (Some of which follow Krill and other sources of food to the surface at night).

If they add goblin sharks im out, they creep me out lol...

Some of those they do have though
skyflyerjen May 24, 2017 @ 9:42pm
Well, you'll be happy to know that there are already lionfish and black tip reef sharks in the game. :)
No problem about the suggestion! I believe Endless Ocean (mostly Endless Ocean 2: Blue World) has every single one of those fish/mammals you mentioned!
But let me tell you... if a sixgill or goblin shark showed up at night I would have a heart attack!!! I think the megamouth shark comes up at night, too.
