EDIT: Also make sure to strengthen your weapons at the smithy. Your starter sword is incredibly wimpy even on easy, so you should really go talk to the smithy and make it stronger. Don't worry about degredation, that just means how many times you can use the "refine" option to build it up. After that, you'll need to use reforge along with scrap metal obtained from breaking down weapons.

I think i happened to come across a style with damage reduction against the chu-dan stance i was working on. Damage dealt returned to normal when i switched to waki
For instance Tokyu style from the dojo has a defense skill against Chu-dan stances. And Kogure's Iai style has a defense skill against guns.
It's good to know for certain enemies...
