Do Germans play the game?
I am just wondering. I can understand that they have a total different feeling about playing a WW2 game than people from countries that were on the allied side during WW2. If I try to look from the Germans perspective I can understand that it can be a bit uncomfortable playing on the allied side and shooting German AI. Or is it that Germans gamers just see it as a piece of history like the rest of us and really don't have any special attachment and feeling to it?

Please only normal comments (especially from Germans that play the game), this is not a troll topic so keep it nice.

The Sniper Elite series generally does pretty good in the European market, with language in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese-Brazil, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese. According to VGChartz, on consoles first-week the game sold best in Europe with 120,824 units sold (53%), compared to 69,304 units sold in the US (31%). Looking more closely at Europe, the game sold an estimated 35,954 units in the UK, 16,786 units in Germany, and 15,159 units in France.

Pretty good for a self-published title, and Rebellion recently announced that they've sold 10 million copies across all platforms.

Well most of Europe was on the allied side so thats why I am wondering. I am from Europe (Netherlands) and I like fighting WW2 games against the Germans, but for me it is just playing a game in a historic setting. If I would play war games against my own nationality (even when it's historic) then I might have had a different feeling about it, even when it's just a game. Maybe I am asking to deep questions on a game forum, don't know :)
Most germans would not call themselfs patriots because of the nazis in the past. it is a strange relationship between german citizens and their country germany. also germany was divided between the BRD and DDR in the cold war, which contributed to this too. so everything related to the third reich, the nazis and its identification is as far away as for most of the other people from foreign countries i think. for myself, i have no problems shooting nazis in computer games or watching a movie where Hans Landa gets humiliated by Lieutenant Aldo Raine in the end of scene Inglourios Basterds.^^

we have some rotten eggs in the basket who wants to go back in time before 1945, but what they think, feel or want to express most of us really don't care. And we show them this all the time if they are going to march in the streets. usally they won't come far at all.
The better question are:
- Are you the kind that always pick the Allies faction when given the chance in any WW2 game?
- Will this give you some extra insurance of patriotism deep down in your heart?

Remember that those of us who play games today aren't the ones that started the war nor participated in it. These considerably silly political baggage weighs almost nothing in the 21st century virtual world. If anything, I would rather be focusing on the ongoing debate that suggests video game violence may have negative real life influence.

I'm German and I love the game so far. I've also played both the "Death to Spies" and the "Commandos" series where you play the Allies faction, too. As stated above, Nazis and the Third Reich don't represent the regular German so I don't have any problem with this scenario.

Thats good to hear! I can imagine that it could be uncomfortable kiling AI from your own nationality, but apparently you also see it from a detached historical perspective that has no relevance on the Germany from now. The saying 'time heals all wounds' is very correct then :)

Well the thing is that most WW2 games don't have an other playable side than the allied side. The games that can be played from nazi persective is a minority. And I was not actually aiming for the patriot aspect, but more the nationality aspect and the fact you have are killing AI from your own nationality in the WW2 games.

I was actually touched when I learned about some of the German soldier's background after I would tag them in the game and more so after reading their letters to friends, girlfriends, wives, and parents. These soldiers were afterall ordinary "people" caught up by circumstances in a world war. Some volunteered and others were conscripted. However I didn't hesitate to shoot them as they wore the uniform and would have fired upon me had I been spotted. Following orders you might say. Nonetheless I think the inclusion of backgrounds and letters lended a human element to the game and reminded the player these AI soldiers where "human" and not unlike their allied counterparts. Its too bad, you couldn't capture a combatant if he would lay down his arms and surrender.

It is just a game. Everyone play it. Not matter if you are german or not. Nazis are bad, so shooting them dead is nothing special. It is what we do when we play computer games -we shoot the bad guys dead! :steamhappy: If they are germans or arabic people or asian or zombies - - - It just does not matter.
:) no germans left i plugged em all

I have played with some Germans in the past two weeks.
@zornius
Was Digga?
I am german and shooting nazis is completely ok to me. Most of my friends arent germans and i hate racists just by nature.
But to be honest its not a special german problem. I got to knew racists from all over the world. Its a dissease and i hope there will be a cure in the future. If i look to other european countries and their right wing parties i feel bad!

What Digga? What do you talk about the Wehrmacht? What peace do you mostly The Wehrmacht made the massacre of the Polish population and the Jews by the SS logistically possible in the first place, so it was undisputedly part of the Nazis' extermination machinery (blood and soil ideology). All of this has been proven empirically. The myth of the radiant and glorious Wehrmacht, which would like to acquit itself of war crimes and the Holocaust, has thus been refuted.
♥♥♥♥ the Nazis and f*** the Wehrmacht. You should go back to school and learn German history.
