not at all, but i will say the story for me and the awsome game play started from se2 and up, both 2 & 3 are also great single player games in there own right.

again thats over to you, and if you just go with se4 i feel you will not be disapointed

No. There's precious little story or plot, and the older games feels very limited after you've played this one. Sniper Elite 4 brought massive changes to the franchise, taking it from a linear corridor-stealth game into the Open World and giving it longer, more challenging missions. I personally wouldn't be able to enjoy the older games having played this, they would feel too limited and too limiting.

And besides, they aren't set in cronological order to begin with. Sniper Elite 2 is set in immediately post-war 1945, Sniper Elite 3 is set in 1942 and Sniper Elite 4 in early 1943.

I can synopsise the plot from the first three games if it helps.

The Nazis have a <secret weapon program> and it falls to you to stop them, by shooting hundreds of them in the face and then blow up the V2 Rocket/Homing Missile/Poison Gas/Nuke/other

And that's literally it for story. All of Sniper Elite's considerable charm and fun come from the great gameplay, the 'story' is C-grade at best.
